View Full Version : traded my 400ex for a banshee

Myself and a fellow member on here traded quads last night since his g/f needed something she could crank with ease. I think the trade was well worth it on both parts. The one I got is from fasterblaster09 I believe is his s/n on here. Its a fun bike, now I need to get tires. Im taking the +4 swinger off for now and putting the stock one back on. It has bald stockers on the back so whats a good 19" or 20" tire to run on these to hook up? Ive never owned a banshee but im not new to 2 strokes or quads. I was thinking of running some holeshot mxr4's or some 20" holeshots. I do mostly free riding with long fast straights, some mx style but nothing major at all, also me and my brother flattrack from time to time.
Also any suggestions on what is some good exhaust for it will help also. Im going to keep in frames on it, no drag pipes or anything like that. All ill need is the header pipes, I have good silencers on the bike.

any pics? just go with the same manufacturer of the silencers. i see the previous owner didnt own it long and was calling it an 03... just an observation

i meant 03, not 04 lol oops. I talked to him when he first got it to now so its cool for him not owning it long. I know why he got rid of it. Ill get pics of it as soon as I fix a few things on it and make it look good again. Its not really rough right now just some stuff doesnt match lol

Welcome to the addicition:p
Good in-frame pipes... well depends. You sound like you like wide-open, all-out riding. Lot's of speed. In that case I would look into some DMC's or T5's.
It also depends what's done to the motor. Both the DMC's and toomey's respond well to engine modifications.
Rear tires, well, banshee's just don't hook that well. I have Dirt Runners on back, (holeshot clone) and they actually hook pretty good. Titan trail claw II's hook real nice too.
** Just noticed you like playriding a lot too. Lot's of people talk down on FMF Fatty's... but I think they're just as good as any other. They come on real early, and have a real nice broad power and decent rev. They're awesome all-around trails-woods-mx-open pipe.

Just looked at what he had done in his thread.
With the mild port job, and other bolt on's, I think DMC's would suit you well. They respond very well to ported and have awesome top end.
The best part is, if you don't like them, you can easily swap them off for Fatty's which have better bottom.

yeah I forgot he said what was done. I also believe it was bored since he gave me the pistons that came out of it and the left cylinder piston was tore up (pitted on top pretty bad) so to me that would mean a possible bore job unless the cylinder wasnt harmed and stock's were put back in. Ill have to tear it down someday and check. It also has an adjustable timing plate running 3 degrees of timing, is that too much for the fmf's? Im trying to figure this thing out. It runs great right now how its sitting, it just needs a few little odds and ends put on it and fixed but nothing major at all. It also has the filter set up that is 1 big filter into both carbs.
I like the FMF's they are just rusted and not as good looking as they once were. Thats one main reason id like to get a different set. I also always liked toomey's all my friends that had them said they loved the power they put out

You can actually set if for +4 timing with ANY pipe, unless you have high compression. (Which in that case you still can, but might have to run race fuel.)
I never really cared for Toomey to be honest.. I think they suck. But people seem to love them. They sound like crap and look like crap, and had an odd power curve IMO.
You can also look into Paul Turner High-Rev's, Pro Circuts, or FMF SST's.

Why are you getting so hyped up? Because I PERSONALLY don't like the way they sound? I just don't like the whole pingy/rough sound.. I like smoothness.
And they are NOT a lot like DMC's.. I have ridden with both. I actually traded T5's for the DMC's also. The DMC has a much nicer sound, and in my opinion, the powerband is more fun.
I just don't like Toomey's.. so what? Don't get all pissy because of it. Everyone has opinions. I've been there, done that. Just how I feel.

Heres the only pic I had. I repainted all the plastics a little while ago (its baking in the sun drying and letting the paint really settle to the plastics) and I ordered my other seat cover. I just got a black N style gripper seat cover. Im picking up some cascade billet exhaust hangers along with billet exhaust clamps to go with all the other cascade things on it:

you're getting pissy kid, not me. you always need to write a paragraph for a response? id take the many others opinion that praise toomies then this 16 year olds. t5s havent been sold since 1995 for nothing is all im gonna say

i personally like the sound of the toomey's. Its a 2 stroke, i dont like them to sound smooth. My 250r was pingy with the full LRD exhaust and I loved it. My brothers is the same way with the ESR trx5 centermount. I think im going to look in to the toomey's personally. Nothing against DMC's id just prefer toomey's to them.

haha how am I getting pissy? You're the one making a bunch of attacks and basically saying since im 16, I know nothing. Seriously dude, grow up. Not everyone's going to like what you like.
I guess im not allowed to say I don't like toomey's, because, you know, my opinion doesn't matter because im 16, and I know nothing.
BTW, they didn't make the T5 since 95.. It started with the T1 back when the banshee came out, and progressed through the years.
But wait, im a 16 year old that doesn't know anything. So don't worry.
I said so myself, a lot of people like T5's. I'm just not a fan of how they preform. Get over it.

It's all personal opinion dude, get what appeals to you:cool: Banshee pipes are like candy, so many different types to choose. Don't like one? It's easy enough to sell em and try another set. If you like toomey's, then go with the T5's and see if you like them.

very true. Ill get the pipes later down the road. The fatty's are doing well now. I just need to get some tires on this thing and put the stock swinger back on it. Got to buy a chain and some new sprockets as I dont want to run the old ones

Banshee's, banshee's like to whip chain's.. haha. So I wouldn't want to risk running worn sprockets. Word of advice: If you don't have one already, you might want to pick up a case saver.
And tires, I mean holeshots should do you well. Mine are imitations and hook good, I would imagine the real ones are better.

Oh, one more thing. lol. I noticed you have the boost bottle on it. I recommend ditching it for a stock crossover tube. The boost bottles are known to move around a lot, and rip the little boots it sits in. (Causing annoying air leaks)
And believe it or not, it was dyno proven that the stock crossover makes like 1 more hp. I know, not much of a difference, but it's something.

well Im not sure its a case saver but it has a cascade billet stator cover on one side of it but I did notice the part of the case that the rear of the cover bolts to is gone so im assuming it tossed a chain already and broke it off. Im going to be looking for another stock bottom end to swap everything over to just to have it right. Nothing is leaking and im checking the fluids tomorrow and changing them. What fluids to run for the tranny?

A lot of guys run ATF. I just stick to 10w-30. It works fine. It's just lubricating gears, not like it's lubricating the top end or anything.
And yeah, if a chunk is missing, then it's thrown a chain. Like I said, pretty common on these things. Mine has been thrown twice, but ive been lucky enough for it to be caught by the swingarm before it hit the case.. Hasn't happened since I put new sprockets on.
I'm sure you know the good 2-stroke oils to use, as you've owned a 250r before. I personally run Maxima Super M. Castor 927 is another popular one.

Check out hillclimbersforum some time.. put down "DMC-Banshee350" as a reference. Pretty chill sight, lots of good people, and the majority of them are banshee owners. Always good info. (They helped me a lot when I first got my banshee)

I would love to try something other then Super M, experiment some other oils. But there's only ONE guy that sells 2-stroke oil locally.. and that's all he has.

ive ran amsoil, maxima, and a few other brands I cant think of right off hand and was the most satisfied with the amsoil so far

i also run amsoil. what makes u more satisfied with amsoil then the others?

honestly, may sound stupid but I find the quad runs better with the amsoil in it. I had problems with mixing the maxima oil for some reason. I could never get the mixture right. I was also trying to run the "smokeless" one so that may have been something to do with it. Same as with my brothers, we both went through the different oils together and both stayed with amsoil for quite some time. He has been running the amsoil for the last 2 years with no problem

I know the t1's were never made to the public... they just made them for the banshee to race the baja in 86.

well im glad the banshee is running good, I liked it. My girlfriend loves the 400ex, but the next day I got back from work and she had the stock tires/rims on it by herself, I guess she really disliked them lol, they are on my 450 now. She also wanted different plastics, so we traded for some stockers in good shape. But all in all, she loves it. Thanks, neil

lol sounds good man, glad to know she likes it. Its a very dependable bike thats for sure. I found out what that rattle was, it was the cascade side cover was missing some screws so i put every single screw back in it and fixed the front brakes. I also repainted the whole bike and put a black seat cover on it, it came out well. I washed it today and it cleaned up well. Glad to know the quad is holding up well, if you have any questions or want to make a ride together sometime just hit me up.

amsoils decent ive run it, castor 927 is good, super m, klotz benol/techniplate/ r50, gold spectro all good oils, even motul. My favorites are deffinatley the castor 927, klotz benol and spectro. They are all castor based oils which dont burn nearly as clean as a good synthetic oil but offer amazing protection for your topend and smell great. A synthetic burns alot cleaner but I don't ever forsee it offering the protection good ol castor gives you. I feel much safer running a castor based oil or r50 at a leaner ratio then any other oil, 40:1 with it gives you the great protection doesnt make it run real lean, and can still handle some high rpms.
Beware though castor can gum up power valves sometimes. I've never had problems with it myself but iv'e heard more then one person say they have but its ok the banshee doesn't have that problem.
Just my 2 cents
