A quick way to check is the location of the VIN .....

The 86-87 frames have it stamped on a plate welded to the left rear subframe just below the rear shock reservoir mount.

The 88-89 frames have it stamped on a crossmember in the front where the main downtubes go similar to the 400ex, 300ex, etc.
