I have $800 to put into my stock 08 400ex. My question is what mods should I do and in what order? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I just ordered a full HMF exhaust, dynatex cdi,K&N kit, and the jets for $625. What stage Hot Cam should I get to go with these mods? Thanks for the help guys.

You should have started with the suspension first since that is one of the only areas that the 400EX lacks in. In theory, a better suspension setup will give you more power since you'll be able to ride harder and faster than you will be able to with the stock suspension. You should have gone with a Sparks key instead of the CDI. The aftermarket CDIs don't really do anything on these bikes. The 400 produces pretty much all of it's power in the low and mid ranges. The stock CDI has a limit of 9100RPMs and all dynos show that the power starts to fall right around there. Also, a full exhaust system isn't necessary on a stock bore engine.

My list would have been:

• 450 Shocks
• Nerf Bars
• Handlebars
• Sparks Key
• Uni Air Filter
• Slip-on Exhaust

That would probably be around $650 - $700. That would have left you with enough to start saving up for some engine mods. I would probably go with some extended a-arms and an axle first to help give you a more stable machine.

Thanks for the info Bkelley, I see you on club700xx all the time. I put a offer in on ebay for the stuff I said I ordered and they did not accept so I guess I can keep looking around. This is my wifes bike so you are prob right about starting on the suspension. Do the 450r shocks bolt right up or do I have to mod them to fit and should I get the rear shock from a 450r aso or just the fronts? I will start looking around for the parts you recommended. Again thanks for the help guys.

No problem, man. But, like I was saying, the suspension is really the only weak point on the 400EX. The rear shock is fine for normal use, but the fronts are like pogo stocks. Just putting on the KFX 450R shocks, a-arms and axle made mine feel like a totally different machine. I had to do some modification on the KFX shocks but the TRX450r shocks are pretty much a direct bolt on. You just have to grind down the nut on top of the shock mount that the plastics bolt to. You can just knock it completely off if you want too as well since it is just tack welded on. But, since it is for your wife, you might want to look into some KFX shocks or have the TRX shocks sent out for re-valving and sprung for her weight. They are pretty stiff. I really like the KFX shocks, they are softer and will actually drop the front end a bit and widen it as well. Ideally, you'd want to have whatever shocks you're getting set-up for her bike and weight. Don't know if you want to go that far out or not.

So i looked around on ebay and found a KFX 450 stock axle, a-arms, and shocks. do I have to get anything eles to install all of these onto her 08 400ex? Also are all the slip ons about the same? I was looking at a HMF or a Sparks Racing.

you only want to get the kfx450r shocks. the a-arms and axle won't work.

Yeah, you're only gonna want the shocks. They are going to require you to grid down the eyes about 1/8" off each side, though. So be prepared for a little work to get them on. It's really not that bad. As for the exhaust, the HMFs preform pretty good and sound awesome. You can get them for like $220 on eBay.

So the KFX 450 shocks will work with the stock A-arms?

I just got them on ebay, thanks for the info. So for your carb you have a 450r carb with a ESR Airbox Eliminator Kit for a 450r ? I just dont see a kit for a 400ex.

Yeah, I went with the ESR kit for a 450r instead of modifying my stock intake. Did it just in case I want to put all my stock stuff back on. You don't have to go with the ESR kit, though. I wouldn't recommend it if you guys ride in wet or muddy conditions. You can just mold the intake boot to the carb or look around for one of zrpilots adapters. That allows you to use the stock intake without modifying anything.

This is what my setup looks like:

I'm thinking about making a custom air box for it, though. Just to keep it protected from water and stuff.
