Did you check the valve clearances before you tore it down?

Any oil in the water? I would check the head for flat surface.

Since you are that far, might as well pull the valves and look for cupping.

I used a small piece of pipe and cut a notch out of it to get access to the keepers. That and a large C-clamp to compress it.

No...... :( could I not put the cams back in the head and do it.....??

No water in the oil....... I will check the head surface.

Good idea I was going to buy a valve tool on e-bay for like forty dollars....but I've been thinking about making something since I had the 300ex head apart.

the cotters (keepers) are very easy to get out but to put them back in does require a valve compressor of some sort to get them back in, i have a pic of the special tool if you feel you can make one
to get them out just place a deep socket over the spring cap and give it a lite rap with a smallish hammer , make sure you have a clean floor ,really the closer to the floor the better maybe on a biggish towel

I have not tried checking the valves with the head off, don't know what effect it will have on readings without the cam chain tension.

If you find that you are at zero clearance I would definetly pull the valves. I tried reshimming mine, lasted about 20 hours then I was back into it. Intake valves were cupped.

Great videos.

Well I had a brain fart.......after looking futher into the cd-rom service manual I got the ring end gap is 0.08 - 0.20 for both I have 0.15 & 0.25 with the rings out and I'm sure the valves are a little tight......... daaaa there it is. I'm going to istall the cams tonight on the bench and see what I got and go from there....and order a set of rings. Thanks I love the vid thing now.....much better then still pics.

If you are doing rings you might want to do a light ball hone on the cylinder so they break in right. I checked the valve clearances with the head off and it was the same after I put it back in. I just checked it after some riding the other day. Throw a drze kit in there while youre at it. You need new gaskets anyway plus the dual valve springs and did timing chain are nice. Might save you another teardown in the future.

Just watched your last video. I believe you can get individual shims from suzuki for a few bucks a peice. I bought the hotcams shim kit. They are compatible with a ton of different motors so I felt like it was a worthwhile investment. Get the new valves in there and get a good measurement. If youre not in a hurry you could just order the ones you need in case the ones you get aren't right\. Just tripple check your math if you are ordering them individually.

Thanks.....cataway said he had a set of intake valves I'm going to get them and then see were I'm at. We just bought it......the kid I got it from had no clue the motor was bad the guy he bought it from told him it wouldn't start quick and wouldn't idle cold because it had a jet kit in it...........people are messed up. The kid feels bad I told him don't worry about it me and Kyle will fix it, it's Kyle's first project quad. We're just going to do a half a** job on it to get it going for now......... we're still building his 300ex race quad waiting for the motor from TC. the money trees about dead.....lol.
