Check therangerstation.com. I have a 302 for my ranger, just never put it in. First question is, is it going to be 4wd? If so that will limit some of your tranny's and you'll need either an np205 or 208 Tcase. You can make you own motor mounts with the stock mounts, just use 1/4'' plate. Best way to do it is to buy a fully running donor truck. Stock 2.9 ecu's with a few modifications will run a 302/5.0 in most cases. My brother did a 351/396 stroker swap in his ranger, so he's the ranger guru. Did a 302 swap in a bronco II which is essentially a ranger.

i might scratch the 5.0/ranger swap if my dad will let me have his old circle track 350 and do a 350/s10 swap

The swap isnt that bad to do really. Heres my body dropped and bagged 302 swap ranger. Has a mild 302 with a built c4 and 8.8 behind it.

Let me know if you need any help or more info on the swap.

if you plan on remotely doing any highway driving with it, I'd go with an AOD or something with an OD. Depending on what kind of HP number you're looking into, you may want to think about jumping up to a c6. Do a roller bearing conversion on it and you're set. A c4 can be built to take a lot of hp, but but at what price?

As long as you keep the 302 mildly build, a pretty much stock AOD will work just fine.

Put a shift kit in it, and either the 1pc input shaft, or at least get the hardened inner input shaft and a good torque convertor. Lokar performance makes a TV cable for the AOD, which I recommend to make things much easier for you.

Are you wanting to FI the 302 or carb it? I really like the Barry Grant Demon series carbs. I run a Speed Demon (650cfm) and it feeds my 306 (302 bored .30" over) with NO problem.. in fact its probably a little to much carb, but its all good.

an 8.8 rear-end would work great also, and you might consider having it narrowed down and get Moser Engineering (or a like company) to make you some custom length axles. Narrowing it will allow you to sit the truck down over the tires.. overall a meaner look IMHO.

Im thinking about doing something like this myself here soon, and putting a more stock engine in my '79 to get my fuel economy back...:ermm:
