04 big bear starter check

hello all.
ihave a 04 big bear, bought new,370 miles on it. garage kept, adult ridden. dont know if it was a coincidense or not but yesterday i rinsed the pollen off of it and now the starter wont engage. the solenoid buzzes but wont engage the starter. it will crank up by pulling the starter rope.can i get some jumper cables and hook directly to the starter to see if the starter will spin or will this screw something else up?
any suggestions appreciated.

ps. it has set overnite so all the water should be out of it now.

OK, SO I WENT AHEAD AND TRIED TO THE 12 VOLT DIRECTLY TO THE STARTER AND NOTHING HAPPENS, NO NOISE,BUZZ CLICK CLICK, NOTHING. DOES THIS MEAN THE STARTER IS BAD?
THE STARTER HAS TWO BOLTS ON A BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE STARTER IN PLACE, WHEN I REMOVE THESE 2 BOLTS, WILL I HAVE ENOUGH ROOM TO SLIDE THE STARTER OUT OF THE HOUSING? IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL ONLY SLIDE BACK ABOUT AN INCH.
