i was thinking about saving and selling my for 400 for a 450r. i ride mainly trails , creeks, and woods , what would be better getting a 450 or making the 400 nice?

lol we have beat this subject to death, i think for maintenance and such its said that the 400ex is more reliable, which would make sense since you have to adjust valves and such a lot more often on 450's but 450's are good also. 400ex's are excellent trail machines when setup for it but 450 power is something fun to have also. You will get mixed responses so i just say go with what you feel is right for you

You say you ride mostly trails.
I assuming that also means,
you are very rarely wide open in 5th gear,
looking for more power or speed.

A 400ex is a near bullet proof machine, that has more mods available than any other thing out there, is plenty fast and powerful for any trail rider out there, and will never let you down when properly maintained.

A 450R is a racing machine, period.
That's what it was designed for, intended for, and it does that job very well.

Since we often go on 30-40-50 mile rides, I Always carry a towrope with me.

The ONLY place the tow rope has EVER been tied to my quad is on the rear grab bar.
but I have tied the OTHER end, to the FRONT bumper of quite a few OTHER machines,...
but never to the front bumper of another 400EX.

make your own choices, but make them with intellegent thought.

How does tow strap location have anything to do with his question? Anyway, 450s are all around great but I think it would be much cheaper to build up the 400 a little and it would make it just as good as a 450 in the woods.

He's saying he never has to be towed back, he's the one doing the towing.

i'd go for the 450. i recently moved up to a 450 and the power is unbelievable. the bike will feel roomier and lighter too. you wont be sorry

go to a 250r. its much faster than a 400ex and more reliable and easier to maintain than a 450.

if you dont mind shifting and clutching alot a 250r is the most economical upgrade to a 400ex.

but to be clear. a 400ex with suspension upgrade and a few upgrades to wake up the motor will have you flying through the woods.
