I got a 02 400 ex with wiesco 440 kit, eldlebrock carb, big gun rev box, ported and polished, 1mm bigger valves full yosh exhaust.. This thing does not run very well I dont think. Is there something I need to do? You guys think the stock carb is better than the edlebrock? Give me some advice, I just got a 08 yfz 450, the 400ex is my spare quad/ wifes.
Thanks

You may need to jet that thing still....?

Or clean the carb out, get a better plug?

What have you tried already?

On the edlebrock carb there is no jetting. I have adjusted the quick shot, and the a/f mixture. It will wheelie right up, but just seems like it dont pull. Maybe I just got it geared wrong. How should the 440 run against stock? Its got a splitfire plug in it.

I would first off check the A/F mix.. What does the plug look like, rich, lean?? Does it pop sputter or fall on its face??? I am running 2 teeth off the back sprocket(from stock), with just about the same mods, using a 450r carb, my bike will beat the hell out of my old 450r, with out a doubt in my mind.. As far as you beating a stock 400?? Really easy, as for the 450, it should do the same, aslong as the 450 isn't modded to hell..

It must just be that carb! Could it be the cam too, need a stage 3? I got a 2 in it. I no it needs something its embarassing. I may put the stock carb on it to see if it runs better. Any ideas on the jetting?

the machinist at the shop i had mine ported at said he had a 440 that had that edelbrock carb on it and he said the 450r carb is way better. but my 440 with a stg 2 cam in it ate 450s up as long as it wasnt a modded 450. i have a stock carb with a 185 i think and a 45 pilot middle notch on the needle and 2-2 1/2 turns on the a/f dial. that was a slip on exhaust and stock airbox. im sure yours with the better setup should be way fast. are you running a higher compression piston on reg gas? it could run like crap then. or your valves could be out of adjustment. the cam should have come with directions, the tolerances are bigger on the stg 2 cam over stock. line it up to that 450 you just got and see how she does. you should be just as fast or faster in a drag than that 450 if its stock.

I am with the above. I would try a 450r carb out on the bike, see what happens, just for ref, I am running the stock pilots, a 190 main jet in mine, along with a cam2 and 93oct mix

It has the 11:1 piston, I run race gas 110 octane. It is no comparison to my 450. Seeing how you guys say it should be right with it, there has to be something up with that carb. I am putting stock back on and im gonna look for a 450 carb. Valves are in check I just adjusted them when I put the +1mm in.
