Do you have to have a plus one tank to work with a oversize tank??? I got myself confused b/c on 400ex's the tank wraps around so it has to be +1, on the R's the tank just goes straight up right so it shouldn't matter.... It's been since 1998 on my last XC250R build so kinda forgot sorry

On my 2002 arens xc build I had to use a +1 +1 stem to clear the older style 3.6 ims tank...I have a newer version and it looks like it wraps around the stem more than the older ones....

you can use a stock stem with a oversize tank.

i have the older ims 4.0 gallon and it rubbed the bar clamp at full turn. I went to a +1+1 to fix it

I had a 87 frame, plus one stem and LSR fat bar clamps and the clamps would hit an old IMS tank so I got rid of the tank.

I now have an 86 frame, stock LSR stem with the bottom piece of an LSR clamp, +1+1 rox risers, and a Clarke 4 gallon tank, and it fits like a glove.

So I think, you need to go forward.
