Went to park my 400 in the garage and noticed that it was making a dragging sound. Checked it and I saw that the axle had moved.

Here is a picture of what I am looking at. What all do I need to fix it. Hope it is not too expensive to fix.

Please help lead me in the right direction to repair it. I am sure if I spent more time looking at it I could figure it out but I dont have lights in my garage.

Just to be safe I would rip everything apart and get new bearings. Rocky mountain has them for around 30$ and it shouldn't be too hard for you to finish taking it apart.

PM me if you want me to take screenshots of my service manual for disassembly and reassembly and email them to you.

Is this something that happens pretty frequent on these. Could anything other than the bearings be damaged. I do remember that the seller said he just replaced the axle. Could he of left it loose.

yep and on the right side there is a little clip that holds that axel nut on when u take it off u actually tighten the inner nut then that big one until u can get to the clip. unless u lossed that axel nut id buy another clip as well.

he didnt lose the clip it is by the hub area so you should be good with just replacing the bearings and make sure you get the right kind not for dual carrier

The clip that you are talking about looks like it is around the wheel hub on the right side.

Thanks for all of the great information. I am a total noob with atv's right now. Even though I am a GM mechanic this is a whole diff. world.

I am going to order the bearings and I would like to make sure I do the job right the first time. Any aftermarket parts that I should replace the stock ones with that will increase durability.

am i the only one that would try just checking for gouges and play in the bearing races before going out and potentially wasting money?

I orderd the parts and I used the old parts to fix it for short term use and it done the same thing after about 5 minutes.

How come the large nut on the right side of the axle has threads but it does not attach to nothing. The only thing I see to hold it in place is the snap ring.

Why is there threads or is something missing?

b the looks of that pic, your lock nut is boogered all to hell, the end of that nut actually has a grove that the snap ring will seat in as well, this is what keeps it tight on the axle, check bearings, all the surfaces the bearings ride on as pipless said, and get you a new nut and circlip for sure.

might not hurt to get a new circlip too, yours might be sprung, if not, just make sure its fully seated in the axle groove as well as the groove in the face of your new nut, and with the rest of the parts there you should be in good shape for quite some time.

I thought that the circlip came with the new axle lock nut kit. Is the circlip the same as a outside snapring. (that is what is on it now)

extremetrucker

hell, i dont know if it comes with the nut or not, dont confuse it with the big snap ring that holds your brake caliper stay on the carrier, the circlip im referring to is the one thats sitting on your hub in one of the pics. did you order a stock axle nut, or an aftermarket?

I ordered this one. Hope it is good. I am going to slowly upgrade the atv. http://www.amazon.com/1999-2008-Honda-Trx400ex-Durablue-Posi-Lock/dp/B000GZR1O2/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1270653876&sr=8-12

Going to fix the known mechanical issues first.

I have one front wheel with a wobble to it and the rear wheels have a little wobble. Looks like it is the wheels bent and not the axle.

ok, looks like it should come with it then, ive never actually used one of those kind, i always either had an antifade hub assembly, or the kind with a pinch bolt, by looking at that style, it should be fine, just dont overtighten that set screw it looks like it could strip easy, or distort the the threads on the nut. im sure itll work fine though.

I had a new snap ring that I installed for now. The one that was on seemed a little big. I put one on it and seems to be holding up for now.

When the other stuff gets here I will replace it all. The old chain does not have a quick link. I guess I can just cut a link on it to remove it.

So far this is what I have ordered.

Front and Rear plastics (yellow)
Axle Lock Assy
Chain
Front and Rear gears
Emergency Brake Block Off Plate

Don’t forget the bearing seals. And the o ring seals for the carrier. Yeah just cut the old chain off and put your new one on.

Thanks for all of the helpful replys.

I called the previous owner and the bearigns are brand new along with a few other parts. I already ordered everything to fix it so I will run what I have for a little while and then replace them. Maybe on the next rainy day.

I have alot of time because I am a disabled vet from Operation Iraqi Freedom.

I replaced the worn out c clip with a new one and I have not had any problems since. I am going to make this ATV more of a rugged type not really worrying too much about too much power.

Next upgrades include some new tires and wheels.

Then maybe
New Brake Pads Front and Rear
Stainless Braided Brake Lines
450 shocks
front wheel bearings
Oil Cooler with Fan
Complete Exhaust System
New Rear Axle carrier
Stock Thumb Throttle (it has the motorcycle style on it now)

Then I will start dressing it up

During the winter I am going to get everything powder coated and replace alot of the hardware with stainless steel hardware.
