Hello... i will start by saying that i know this has been brought up before... I will be looking for new tires for my 04 400EX soon... and want bigger tires to gain a little more clearance... I don't want to go to big where i start damageing the machine.... What's a good size? i don't mind having to change sprockets or anything..

I prefer 20's just b/c I have a very large thick skid on the swinger.

If I was to upside 21's or 22's are a good size if your gonna ride in the woods/trails Your stock machine will have enough power without changing sprockets.

x2 22's are nice for the clearance but they can start to ballon and look funny. My sister has 22" razrs on her 300 and they work great but just have a bit of bubble to them. they would give you the best height though, I would also suggest putting a 14 tooth on to compensate for the bigger size no matter if you get a 21 or a 22. just my opinion though. steve

Can i get away with 22's till my sprockets wear down? then change over??? and will i notice that much of a change??

as long as they are not overly heavy tires you should be ok. it will make some difference but not a terrible amount i dont think. If you run a razr or equivalent then you will be fine. when it wears out you can get different stuff and be fine. steve

When I put my 22's on the power loss is quite noticeable, I would definitely gear down a tooth.

what kind of 22" if you dont mind me asking. I have only ran 21" mud skarks that are 6 ply with my 15/38 and it wasnt too bad. steve

Well... My cousin's recomending Holeshots.... But i have not made up my mind.... figured i'd see what size i was gonna go with... and see what tires are that size and within my budget...

either set are good tires. the holeshot hds are heavy though, the xcrs probably are not too bad, the razrs are right on line with the xcrs and xcs. I would check out all of your options and see which is best. if looking for a cheapo set look for a 250ex tire or a 300ex tire that is stock. it will get you around decent, cheap, and light with the 2 ply design. the more plies the heavier they get. steve

nice, then they are probably a bit heavier than 4 ply razrs. Are those 6ply? steve

Ok... 22 inch tires i'm gonna do... How wide should i go???? I donm't mind a balloon look... i'm sure the wider tires can do a little better in the mud and sand anyways... and should i step up a size in the front to keep it level????

I would say 10 or 11 wide would be plenty. what ever the tire you want to get comes in would be perfect lol. They seem to do ok on the front with them the same. I dont think they really make too many tires that are over 22" or 23" that are still sport tires anyway. steve

i run 6 ply 22x11x9 razrs on the rear with stock front sproket which is a 14t i hope since i ordered a 13t, i belive they changed em in 05 from 15 to 14 (please correct me if im wrong). i like it but i agree there is a decrease in power with a bigger tire obviously. ill post up when i change the sproket. and sorry i kinda stole ur post alittle but ill give it back i promise.

I did not think you stole it.. if you did something that made your machine slower... less powerful.... i'd like to know before i do it... :p

its not huge and its more of a torque thing. if u get bigger tires ur gonna need more torque to spin em. its a easy cheap fix but it will take away from ur top end slightly. i also own a 700xx and dropped a tooth on it. and the difference was amazing especially for trail/wood riding. like i said u lose some top end but how often do u do 74mph in the woods anyway. muwahaha

they would add to top speed but take away from accel slightly. id go with the 22's for added clearence and no more that 11 wide cause all that does is rob HP and dont ldo nothing but make it heavier. im looking at some 22x11x9 razrs on denniskirk.com for like $80 instead of $100+. also the holeshot's are heavier and dont bite as good as the razr but thats just IMO.

I would probably run my 22's and drop another tooth on the front, but I am afraid they will hurt the handling of my quad. I have been doing alot of fast xc style riding lately and entering some corners in third gear before stomping on the brakes and don't want any more body roll. Maybe I will have to give them a try again, it's been a while.

well actually it will take you longer to get to your top speed, it will be faster. you will lose the acceleration since there is more weight to move. the gearing down makes it lower the gears which makes the ratios bigger thus making the tires easier to spin. heres a fun little toy to play with. steve

try a 10" rim and see how it does with that. the roll will be a bit better with the 10" instead, they will still roll more than a 20 for sure. steve
