i"ll be leaving in about 4 hours to go to louisville for state competitions for precision machining. i will be assigned a multitude of tasks like a drill press project, manual lathe and mill projects, indicating tables and chucks, and hand writing codes for a cnc mill for a given drawing. i feel i will do OK but who knows. i do pretty good under pressure, i didnt know i was going to regional comp until the day before, and as a junior, expected to loose againt the other school( both contestants were seniors), but ended up getting first place. also< my teacher says i earned him complete bragging rights because his one junior took down the other schools seniors, lol. i wont be acyually competign till thursday, so i will try to use the internet on my phone to check in and let you know what happens. if nothing else i will be up their with 2 buddys who are going for welding and electricity. should make for a pretty good spring break, cept for as soon as i get bnack friday, i get my widom teeth cut out...:( . so wish me luck!!!

good luck man!
i placed 2nd in my machining skills competition last year as an apprentice. Im so used to using cad/cam that writing code was like a foreign language to me

yea, i love it. mainly cause im really good at math.

as far as cad/cam. im used to workin on mastercam, where you draw it, make a toolpath and tadahh, writes ur own codes, lol. Im good with riding codes, just get confused alot with I and J codes when doing radius' since we cant use the "R" method. i feel i will do ok though. be pretty kick-A if i end up going to nationals though!!!!

OOOOOOOHHHHHHHH LORDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha i just had to listen to the BOBCAD stuff today on letting the comp right the codes. i have been writting them manually now its on too lettin the comp take controll. I and J does get confusing it can be a mess sometimes. My least fav is PLC programming not sure if you have had to do that but it bores me. but good luck for sure man

Yea, I like using cutter comp better, donthave to factor in the tool diameter as much.
We're on our way up their right now. Hope we don't wreck on the way up their, electricity teacher that's driving our suburban don't know what a straigh line is, haha.

Why are people still hand writing codes? We have technology for a reason. I hated manual drafting and all that, once I graduated and moved on to computers a whole new door was opened. The things you can think of and do on a computer is just amazing.

The reason we still have coding and manual machines is b/c you might not be so lucky to have such tech to work with always.

My grandfather was a tool and die maker and did everything by hand, his work would rival any of the computerized stuff. Might take longer, but it will come out just as good if not better.

Hell, you ever seen a periscope dial? He spent a year making 3 of them for the US Navy, they are so complicated and precise its insane. Even the machine would take alot of time just to setup and make 1.

I'll take a guy that can write code over a guy that can't every day of the week. Any monkey can be taught to push buttons......I want a guy that can edit code on the fly if need be and doesn't have to run back to the computer every 5 seconds.

you can say that as much as you want, but when you get the red warning light its going to be a pain to find the mistake in the coding unless you can write it by hand.

A darn good reason to know how to write code is because mastercam or another writing program can make mistake and show errors. We have a nice cnc mill that will always throw errors if theirs more than 3 tools. You have you have to relabel your tools, and say you have a surface that isn't flat exactly, it will cut to where it looks like a fade. So instead of resaving a whole program, just search your codes, do a search, and change ur final depth. Still being able to write codes is a vital skill to cnc! Specially since our cnc uses the old stile screen , still uses floppies.

Do u not put 0 in ur m and g codes. Our haas with throw red everytime if u edit ur program and put a m or g code without. A 0m I.E. M3 or G0 instead of M03 or G00

good thing you caught that. gunna run that facing path tomarrow. im a noob to the whole machining aspect.

yea i was about to ask you about the G code too. Some of our machines have problems doing G00 so you have to sub in G01. Writting by hand takes more skill and knowing what to do. yes anyone can click buttons so that is why usually if you have a good teacher you start out writting codes.

I'm starting to get very nervous guys... Get the flies in my stomach!honestly, I don't know if I'm going to do that great because I focus most of my time on cnc. I would have competed in cnc millng this year but I didn't know that it was a option. Dad told me if I win though, hell take me to get my tattoo on my arm; quoting psalms 23:4

Welp guys, no such luck for me. I don't know what I placed yet, but I can tell you it was not a win. My lathe piece was good. 3 inch round stock, 4 inches long, with 2 step downs, a gouge, and 1.5-14 threads. With a whole in one end and tapped to 3/8-16. But for my inspection, I didn't know how to use the venier scale. I've always been taught how to use them will the dial and when, but these were different, I didn't even know they existed, much less taught on them. So I left 5 blanks empty. My mill piece was going good, had to take a half inch deep cut, and leave the corners, a cross in the center, a pocket in the center, and drill quarter inch holes(4). It was going good until I went to take the cut around the second corner and realized somehow my depth had changed. And my depth changed on every cut after that it would change, so it came out like complete poo. O well, my teacher is proud anyways, specially since I'm competing in manual, which I'm not even taking a class in.(Only cad/cam)
