View Full Version : LTR all the sudden became very hard to start! Extra engine noise

Hey all, i just got my LTR about 2 months ago. It has a cherry bomb, with a full system exhaust and a uni air filter. I was riding the other day on the road and had it pretty well topped out. around 78mph, when i lost power all the sudden.

I noticed a small puff of blue smoke right when i lost power.

Also, when i try to start the quad i have to give it tons of gas and turn it over like 10 times before it will run, and then when it's warm it idles.

The quad is also making more noise than usual, it's almost like pinging noise, more than a tick.

now, the quad hasn't been ridden that much, my buddy got it and hardly rode it, he got in a hole (financially) so i bought it.

if you where riding on the road and toped out and all of a sudden lost power and its puffed out some smoke im almost positve you broke a ring or even possibly the piston might of cracked

What he said, The only way you will know for sure is a comp check and start removing the top end

ok thanks guys, the only thing i don't understand is that the quad hasn't lost any power.

although it is now hard to start, once it's warm it will start up easier and like i said it still has all the power it always had. It does however make that pinging type of noise when it's just sitting at idle.

still the piston rings you think?

U messed something up in the topend. Thats what u get for riding on pavement seeing how fast it will go. Not meant for that.

around 78mph, when i lost power all the sudden.

so you either did or didnt loose power? cuz in the original post you said you did then you turned around and said you didnt loose any power? either way i would take the top end aprt cuz something is deff wrong

notice i said it lost power all the sudden when i was running top end.

it now runs with the same amount of power it had before it just wont sstart ubless i bump it or turn it over about 10 times.

the power loss only happened for a brief moment when something went wrong.

also these quads can run wide open thats why they have a rev limiter. u hit that thing when your shifting half the time anyway. especially when racing.

Yea but not on pavement topping it out. No tellin how long u was goin 78mph's. Thats what messed it up is all i'm sayin.
Let us know whats wrong with it.

either way broke a ring or the piston cracked...something along those lines......these bikes are not drag quads and if you wanted to go that fast on the street you should of got a streetbike

you fellas sure are quick to jump my bones haha.

i have a sportbike that i race so dont worry there satchmo i got my sportbike for the street. iride my ltr on the trails mostly but i have some nice roads out where i live.

ive ridden my 400ex on these roads for the past 2 years...riding wheelies for miles.....no problems. i dont run top end very long.

i had my gps and i wanted to hit the limiter and see how it went, well i didnt even get to the limiter when it did this.

im gonnna set the valves cuz it hasnt been done since it was new and then ill go from there.

would a cracked piston still allow the quad to run like it does?

yea with a cracked piston or broken ring is why it takes so long to start or when you have to bump start it cuz the piston/rings are scaring into the cylinder which in return makes it harder to start

how much u wanna bet? what makes ya think that? u think it just literally went out and skipped a few teeth but now it runs fine when it's warmed up? naw sorry the timing hasn't been adjusted, i'd be able to tell if my timing was off, there would be more or less power i'm sure of it.

i'm pretty sure it's just the piston rings,

It's at the dealership under warranty right now so we will find out what the issue was. It will be interesting to see, i talked to the dealer and explained to him that i was running down the road and he had no problems with that. It's not that unusual to ride quads down our country roads around here, everybody does it, and it's not gonna hurt any four wheeler unless something is faulty, like my LTR. Something wasn't right with the quad if it just busted a ring like that from running it down the road. You can bounce of the limiter for 10 min. without bustin a ring, and this just happened to me like as soon as i got it wound out.

you guys need to check your stats and quit getting on me for riding down the road, it's a quad it can go anywhere! going down a flat track on your quad at 70 mph isn't much different either, or say you have a track with a nice long straight wher eyou can get it all the way wound out......not that unusual. My point is that this quad shouldn't have blown from the way i was riding it, simple as that! u guys can blame the fact that iw as widning it out on the road but we all know that's not the reason.

bent valve folks.

Did you ask the dealer why it bent?

he said it was probably out of shim and needed to be reshimmed but i had that done when it was brand new after 10 hours of riding.

It's funny that NONE of you guys mentioned anything about the valves, everybody jumped on the piston and rings. HAHAHAHA

i will say, i'm glad i didn't go out and buy pistons or rings or something after hearing the advice from this thread. I've talked to a couple local mechanics and they said since it still runs strong it was probably valves. The dealership was actually mislead i think when they did the work because they felt like the engine had failed. I had valves done right after i got it though and that's logged so it was covered under warranty.

If you were to go buy new piston and rings from advice you got off the internet from people that have never rode, seen or heard your quad then I would say you were an idiot.

call me what you want, but i'm not an idiot, judging by your name you look at too much porn!

I've purchased tons of items based on the advice i've got from people here that have never rode, seen or heard my quad.

I've rejetted it from advice from here, i've purchased wheels and tires based on advice from here, i've purchased skid plates based on advice from here.

piston and rings based on advice from ehre isn't that far off, i described my symptoms and how it happened...i just figured somebody else would have mentioned valves but apparently not. i'm glad i didn't go buy these items as i SAID BEFORE!

now don't call me an idiot ya wanker, haha literally....nice name.

well i wanted to follow up on the ltr.

after i put a new exhaust valve in, this same exact problem happened about a month after the new valves.

I've purchased some stainless valves and i'm hoping that should hold.

my buddies ltr has never had any valve problems and we both run the heck out of them.

I'm wondreing if i got a lemon haha.

anyway i'll put some stainless ones in there and that should hold up much better.

compression was tested and it's still real good. no smoke or anything when i ride so i believe the valves went out of wack again or possibly another bent valve.

F4iracer - you can put any type of valve in you want but unless you've had the valve seats reconditioned or replaced you're asking for trouble again. Also keep your airfilter clean.
