Does this make sense?

If you change rear tires from 22" to 20" with no changes to sprokets, gears etc., your top speed would drop 10% (5mph).

C=piD=3.1415*20=62.83
C=piD=3.1415*22=69.11

62.83/69.11=90% distance reduction/revolution or hour.

Your top speed will drop noticably, when I went from 20" to 18" tires which is also a 2" change I noticed a big difference in accleration and a loss on the top end. I'm not sure on the exact math but from my own hands on experience I can tell you that you will notice a difference.

th gear ratio changes on a smaller tire to a larger tire or from a larger to a smaller in this case since the tire will spin faster they will get better acceleration and worse top speed u will notice but not a big deal really because how often do you get to float out for a long period of time:devil and the opposit for a larger tire

You should notice the 10% loss of speed in each gear.

The gain is in the power as it is easier for the engine to spin a smaller tire one revolution but the loss is that you travel less distance per revolution.

you're right on it bakerboyz. I went from 22" XCT's to 20" XC's and didn't like the result. Lost a ton of top speed, definitely noticable, but I didn't really notice it except in 5th. Obviously I lost ground speed in the other gears as well, just didn't notice it as much. Then I sold the 20's. Problem solved.

actually the stock on a 300ex is 13 tooth. I am almost definately sure of that. After i finish this homework i'll go out and count it. regaurdless, would going up on tooth bring it back to or around stock gearing. I ride in the woods at my mom's and the open fields at my dad's so i was thinking about going up one tooth on the from when i'm over there.
