I want to buy a non running motor and build it to a 416 with mild port/polished head, 450r carb and a cam. But, as far everything else to make it reliable and fun I need help deciding. Mods as of now in my sig. Make suggestion on cams and what not please.

I want to be able to run with 450's since all my buddies are buying new 450's. I do not have enough money to buy a new one and I don't really want to, I like my little 400.

I would stick around 11:1 compression to help you to not have to run race fuel. I like my cam but there impossible to find. I would run a stage 2 hot cam. Definitely port and polish, full exhaust is a must too. The 450r carb is a great choice. The set up in my sig put down 37hp which is as much or more as a stock 450.

well i would go 11:1 je if u can find one (i couldn't and when i did it was back ordered from je but there back on the market now)
port and polish
Full pipe
450r carb
+3 timing key (but then u should run 100+ octane gas)
depending on where your riding and what kinda riding you do there are some other things u can do

I want to stick 93 octane gas. I am not racing just messing around on some trails. Do you think the full exhaust is really worth all the money when I already have a slip-on?

So the stage 1 cam over stage 2? Also should I worry about head studs or anything?

depending on the compression you run and what cam you run it is suggested to run hd studs with 11:1 and up. If you use a stage 1 with 11:1 i would suggest studs. stage 2 is pretty much ok for the most part. Stage 1 has a higher dynamic and static ratio. stage 2 for top and mid, stage 1 for mid and low. depends on where you want the power to be. I like the lower side of life so i like the stage 1 and it goes nicely with the 10:1 compression as the stage 2 goes with the 11:1 imo. steve

Ok, so I was planning on 11.1 and I want some more low to mid range for climbing hills and wheelies...the fun stuff IMO. lol. Where are some places to order HD studs.

i have 11:1 416 in mine with the stage 2 cam and love it. It has enough low end grunt to get me going good and the top end is great, feels like it doesnt stop pulling till im at the top of the rpm range. I pulled 5 bikes on a kfx400 last time i ran my bike.

Does it want to pull the front wheels off the ground?

Also what about clutchs, I plan on replacing the clutch once I get the bottom end I just got off ebay. What is the point in an aftermarket clutch basket? I want a clutch that will last, hold, and not to stiff. Im sorry for all the questions, I am new to building motors for quads.

My 416 is a JE 12.5:1, XR400 cam (similar to stage 1 hot cams), 450R carb, ported head, FMF powerbomb and WB E-series. It loves to pull the front end up in every gear. It can pull it up in 5th from 25 MPH to 60MPH without much help.

My KFX450 will only pull on my EX once the EX is in 5th.

Only thing with my setup is that you need access to E85, 100LL av fuel or race gas. I would recommend an 11:1 piston.

As for clutches, I am running a Hinson Billet basket and pressure plate with stock clutch plates and springs. I have been running this clutch setup for over 9 years and have not had any issues with the clutch. I wore out my stock clutch basket in the first 2 years I owned the quad. I have not had to even change the clutch plates since I put in the Hinson basket in, which to me, is simply amazing. The quad is ridden often, probably around 250 hours a year and no issues with the clutch in 9 years, although, it is getting somewhat hard to pull in.

I also ride in Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky.

Hope this helps.
