Last year I had a little accident at the track with my '88 and the frame ended up being tweaked pretty bad. I decided to get another frame and start over. I picked up an '89 frame and had it powdercoated. Also, over the winter I've been picking up some different parts, such as a Roll no-link for cheap so that will go on it, also a durablue, new seat, quadtech hood, and some other stuff. Unfortunately times are a little tough until I graduate college in May, so the front end will stay stock...for now. The build should go pretty smooth, but I don't have a ton of extra time with the engineering classes I'm taking, so my goal is to have it ready for Memorial Day. Here's a pic of my '88 from last year.

That is a FMF Q for a 250R. The "Q" sticker melted, so I replaced it with a regular FMF sticker. I hope to go with something different for this build though, because it has a pretty good dent underneath from the axle. And I don't like FMF.

You gotta love the fresh red powder.

What color did you go with and did you put a clear coat on top? That looks pretty shiny.

I went with red barron...Doug (dtowndiesel) said it was a perfect match to OEM, and there is no clearcoat, but it turned out really shiny and I'm very happy with it.

Been busy these last few weeks, but I got a few odds and ends put on- now I just need to paint my motor cases black as well as work on my calipers a bit, but it should be done by Memorial Day like I planned. Let me know what you think!

Oh, by the way, the Durablue 2+2 is for sale if you're interested, I ended up buying a RPM. PM me if interested.

Rear fenders/seat. I just set the decals on there to see what it will look like, but I'm waiting on the front ones yet.

Thanks-
I still have to put the wire holder on, that's why the bolts are loose.

Unfortunately I will be running the same motor as last year for now- ported stock cylinder w/ coolhead. Hopefully that will change soon though and my current motor turns into a spare. I also plan on getting a roll design front end w/ custom axis to complete it.

For now, yes, but I will change over to a Roll front end as soon as I can afford it.

Looks real good man....did you repaint ur cases black?

SilverLake250R
04-25-2010, 09:39 PM
Yeah I did repaint my cases, I used that high-temp engine paint. I have used it before and it held up real well except on the stator cover, so I polished that. The polishing looks bad in the picture for some reason though, it seems pretty shiny in person.

Hey man, that thing looks amazing. Hope to see that thing flying around Silver this summer. Hopefully my build will be done by June too, but time seems to be really hard to come by.

Keep up the great work.

I got them from Jegs.

http://www.jegs.com/p/Russell/Russell-Tube-Seal-Hose-Ends/747258/10002/-1

I used stainless braided radiator hose size -12, which is 3/4 ID. It is quite stiff to work with and I pricked my fingers on the ends a lot when installing them, bled on my motor, got pissed, threw a screwdriver, couldn't find the screwdriver, got more pissed....and so on, but the end result looks good I think.

Looks good is an understatement man, that is a really nice setup. I am definitely doing the steel braided hose for my next mod.

Thanks!

I have done quite a bit more work, no pics yet, but having a problem with my front caliper mounts hitting the bolts on the rotors. The bolts are not quite flush but very close to it- looks the same as a stock one. Is there a spacer I need for the hubs? I have 88-89 Nac's hubs on 400ex spindles, and the guy I bought the hubs from said he had them on 400ex spindles as well. Any help would be appreciated.

I made quite a bit of progress over the last few weeks, and thought it was about time for an update. I have a few things to work out yet including installing the front brakes, but it is almost done. Got her started up for the first time, fired right up on the second kick, and to my pleasant surprise, it seems the jetting is very close. My motor is the same as last year, but I upgraded to a 38 A/S carb from stock, a Sparks TT pipe from an FMF Rev, and an airbox eliminator kit. I went from a 162 main to a 172, if I remember correctly.

Here's a pic of the left side of the engine, I re-polished the stator cover because it wasn't quite as reflective as I'd like.

Complete Roll Design no-link rear end with a 15.5" Custom Axis shock.

Here's a pic of her naked. This is my temporary pipe setup for Memorial Day weekend. I bought a brand new Sparks TT pipe and silencer from steve250r, but before I make it a used pipe, I wanted to try one and see how it compares to my FMF Rev that I ran last year. Dtowndiesel happened to have an extra laying around that he offered to let me try, so that worked out very well. I currently have a Powercore 2 on it as well just to make sure it doesn't get smashed from the axle nut when jumping - wouldn't want to ruin the Sparks!

I wanted to ride bad today, so I bled the rear brakes and mounted all the plastic. Only thing left is front brakes (which the paint is drying on the MC), upper chain roller (ordered), and engine skid plate. Anyway, here it is complete (almost)! I'll post some more pics from the dunes later. Tell me what you think of it!

Thanks for the compliments! I'll let you know more after next weekend, but so far it feels great. It feels very plush and goes over everything real smooth, but does not seem to bottom out at all either. Doug Roll actually told me to go with a single rate spring setup so that I didn't lose too much energy, but I already bought the shock, so I currently I have the tender spring set up to cross over to the main quite early. As far as who did it, I bought it the way it is and just had the spring PC'd. I called Custom Axis and got a spring rate number from them (400lb main for 200lb rider) and the shock I bought happened to have the correct setup. I assume the valving is correct for the spring because it seems to work well, but not 100% on that since I haven't actually taken it apart. I will need to have it serviced though, because it drips a little oil from the shaft seal, but I am hoping it survives one weekend at the dunes. I have not measured the travel on the setup, but from what I hear, it is as much as you're going to get with a stock frame, in the neighborhood of 12 inches. That is why I am concerned about smashing my silencer on the axle.

However, if you do go with this setup, good luck finding a shock. I'm sure you are aware, but typical no-link setups require a 17.5" shock because the upper shock mount is moved up and back. I saw one on ebay around February that went for 375 BIN, and to this day I regret not pulling the trigger on that soon enough. Anyway, I bought the swingarm for 200 bucks, smokin deal in my opinion, but I didn't realize the issue finding a shock at the time. I ended up paying 550 for my shock, in well used condition, the spring looked rough, and apparently it needs to be serviced.

Oh well, it turned out great and I'm glad the whole setup actually works together correctly, because there is a lot of misleading information on no-link setups out there. Can't be happier today, just finished my last exam of college, I'm finally done with school forever and ready to move on to the real world of engineering, starting Monday!
