i am in the market for new computer speakers. Mine are 10 years old and the headphone end of the cord is going bad.

So for those of you that know stuff about computer speakers, i am looking for a good set of speakers, with good bass, for fairly cheap, say around $50. I know nothing about computer speakers, so any input is helpful. Thanks in advance.

I have the Logitech 5.1 X530. Something equivelant to the X540. Great surround sound for the price! I bought mine off a friend for $35 because he upgraded to the Logitech 5.1 Z5500. The Z5500 is absolutely amazing! The features, the sound, you could have a whole house party filled with music with the speakers just being in 1 room, they are pretty crazy.

Logitech has some good stuff. i went to their website and saw the Z5500. wow, that is pretty insane. I know i want atleast 2.1, but dont know if i should splurge and get 5.1.

IMO its worth it to get a 5.1 system. If you listen to any music or watch any movies you will not regret going 5.1 surround. I use mine for computer, TV, XBOX 360, satilite radio, and phone calls sometimes lol

I have a set of Insignia 2.1 for my laptop and they are great. Good bass, great mid levels too. I hate when i am listening to music when i am not near my speaker cord.

i bought 50 dollar wamart surround sound and use it as 2.1 with my laptop, its sweet!

Not mocking those that say their 2.1 is sweet... but have you tried anything other than it? I thought my 2.1 had great sound for little computer speakers until I went to 5.1 and was just amazed at the difference! Sounds you couldnt even hear on the 2.1 now come to life. How often do you change computer speakers? Get something good the 1st time. If you can afford it Z5500 all day, if not I would say atleast pick up the X540. For those thinking I'm just hyping up Logitech stuff because I own their stuff, I have had several other computer speakers and I hve no intention on changing speakers unless I blow the X530's which really isnt that easy... then I'll get the Z5500.

Having had a 2.1 and then a 5.1 there is no comparison at all!

The 2.1 makes factory speakers look like junk, but the 5.1 will blow your socks off!

Think of it like this, 2.1 is 2 speakers and a sub, 5.1 is 5 speakers (thats left, right, rear left/right, center and the .1 thing they use denotes a sub).

I can literally make my room shake if I crank my logitech 5.1 up. I can make the door vibrate on its hinges lol. Infact Im being totally honest here-it sounds as good if not better than someones hooked up car does so long as the music file isnt crap.

I have a set for the pc and one set hooked up to a tv we use to watch movies and play games and its awesome.

I just like 2.1 because, with mine anyway, 5.1 surround sound makes different sounds out of each speaker, and if the speakers are not the exact distance away from you that they should be, it actually sounds like much worse sound quality, especially if the rear speakers aren't in their proper place. thats why i like 2.1 more, the front right and left speakers are the most powerful and all the sounds come out of them, so i think it sounds better. Just my opninion though, and mine is from walmart, so its nothing special, lol.

^ Logitech does a great job at producing a full sound even if the distances arent exact. I can be anywhere in my room and it sounds way better than any 2.1 I have heard.

Exactly. My set is all together left side and right side and center all behind the computer and it sounds awesome..

i have considered getting 5.1, but i am still not sure. money is an issue with this, but if i see a good set of 5.1 speakers on sale, i might buy them. What i can afford depends on when i get my money back from taxes.

to the person who asked about the speakers i use, i have two sets of speakers, one is a 10 year old set of compaq JBL pro's, and they are all right, i guess. My other set is a really crappy pair i mainly use for my zune.

i want atleast 2.1 because of the sub. the only reason i would want 5.1 is for movies, and my current computer locks up with i try to play a movie, and i dont have any dvd hooked up to my tv, so as of right now i have no real use for 5.1.

If you buy online you can find deals, 10 years ago I scored an old new stock set for 40 bucks-originally over 100.

Just gotta look around man.

IE this set: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121006

Under 100 bucks and 70 watts is more than enough for pc speakers.

i've been looking around, getting an idea of how much they will cost. i think i will definitely go with logitech though. seems to be everyone's suggested brand.
