got this old motor the other day, opened the stator cover plate to find gear oil in there? anybody know why this would happen? the motor needs redone, it was blown up by previous owner. wondering if it is worth redoing or parting out.

The o-ring on the inside of the cover for the counterbalancer may be shot or you might have a hairline crack somewhere inside the case, most likely it's the o-ring.

could also be a crank seal.

I'd say the crank seal.

its either one or the other. if it smells alot like gas(depending on how long it's set) then it may be the crank seal. to be safe i'd replace both.

The counterbalancer holder ears commonly break. That is one of a short list of things that are weak on the TRX. Billet aftermarket holders are expensive, but they're solid. If you can get one used is the best way to go probably. Make sure you replace the o-ring with fresh rubber.

How much oil, just a few drips or a good size puddle?
