well story starts out i bought this quad and it needed top end rebuilt. rebuilt it rode it for 2 weeks and granaded the cylinder. finally just ordere a esr 310 and decided to tear bottom end apart to do maintance on it. took case halves to work and sand blasted them. after blasting 2 decades worth of mud and jun off the cases i found this.

look at pics. this is of the left case. im assuming previous owner threw chain in case? and tried to epoxy it. lol if it leaked i never noticed it in the 2 weeks it was running.

so now i guess my plan is to get new case halves.

Right click on your photo and go down the list to the open with then select paint. Once your in paint go to image then resize and skew then just change the horizontal and vertical size. Usually if you put it at like 40% it will work. THen save it and then your good.

That's well beyond beat. They look like they're past their useful life.

If you can weld good, then i say weld it back up. build up your welds where it will be stronger. cut it down where it needs cut down. weld up the bolt holes and drill and tap them using a case saver as a guide. use a burr and then 3m roloc pads to clean it up before you paint it.

You have to run what you can afford, but I would not want to put my fresh new ESR cylinder on top of that mangled mess!

In fact, I would be suspicious of the case bearings, tranny gears, etc...due to the fact that the previous owner was so negligent.

When there's JB weld outside the cases, that means the broken pieces were sealed in under it and possibly floating around inside, contaminating everything.

When there's JB weld inside the cases like yours, that means there was enough damage to force a complete teardown, but they were too cheap to fix it right. What else did they skimp on?

The cases on my R that I brought last year were in bad shape. The more I looked, the more I found.

Until the case actually broke in pieces during a race. I thought I threw 2nd gear, but actually the case completely let go, probably from a previous break/repair.

Me...I would buy new cases or at least ones that are in better shape. And check all the lower end pieces really good.

Buyer beware!

I always assume things are worse than you can see. After owning a number of these, I came to the conclusion that if you want to keep it and ride it regularly, you need to tear the whole thing apart and replace everything = big $$$.

My first 2 years owning these after owning one 8 years before was plagued with breakdowns and parts breaking. I was wrenching more than riding.

So now (actually 2 years ago) I started the process of building a completely new machine piece by piece.

Last bit of advice - be just as wary buying used cases on ebay - often they are damaged, otherwise you will pay a good price for them. It may be worthwhile buying from someone whoe deals in 250R parts a lot and has a return policy as well as ebay protection, that way you are covered if there are problems.

It is unlikely you will be able to buy new cases from the dealer as I think only the left is available.

Wow addictedtomud you had some really good points. I think you just made up my mind to buy a new case. Im not going to cut corners and half *** it. I was planning on replacing every bearing and seal anyways. I tlked to my dealer and he told me he could get the left case and bearings for lil over 500. But im not sure if i wanna replace onlyy the left case or go to esr and get both cases. I got my cylinder today and have to say i love the way it looks. From all the crap i heard bout there porting i am real happy with mine. Will post pics tonight. Cant wait to ride it. Hope it screams. I only got to side my stock engine for two weeks so hope this new cylinder rips my arms off. Lol

I would not trust that even if you welded it really good. If I were you, I would go to esr and get both cases and save yourself a HUGE headache. I really don't think that case is going to last much longer even if it's welded. I bet it brakes completely and you destroy the whole motor. Welding it would be a waste of time.
