Just got back home from College in December and am in the process of trying to get my ol' 400ex running the way it should.

I cleaned the 450 Carb, repacked my e-series slip on, changed the oil and fuel.
The quad fired up and after running for bit Idled! I do not have the airfilter on.

So I began riding as usual on the roads because the modified airfilter piping dry-rotted and cracked. I began to notice that my pants on my right side keep getting burned and a lot of backfiring. Then I looked at my exhaust and it is glowing. I can't remember my jetting. It SHOULD be Kiehen 170 main, Pilot 50, and 4th clip from the top.

This sound about right? My elevation is 1,100 feet.

I must admit, I never dialed in the 450 carb correctly. But it used to run fine.

THANKS!!!

Do you always run without an air filter? If not then you are surely running lean. Also you have to take into account the weather. Not sure where you are, but if its colder than what you normally ride it that would cause it to run lean also.
