What do you guys think about the MSR AOF Clutch Lever and Perch?? Im wanting to get an aftermarket clutch lever and perch because my HUGE stock one is getting harder to pull and a bit of play (up and down, not pulling wise) and since I dont use the PB anymore. Im not wanting to dump a bunch of money into this, as it dont have to be anything very fancy. Just a regular ol' decent to pull clutch perch and lever. Also, I will be using my stock clutch cable, as im aware of is nothing wrong with it. And I want something close to the feel of stock clutch lever (length)

Will this be a good clutch perch to use or should you guys suggest a different one?? Note: it does not have to be Adjust on the fly, I dont really care about that feature. Thanks for your help on this.

I will do just that! I dont think its a bad price. Being a cheap plain lever and perch goes on ebay for $19 shipped, may as well go ahead and pay about $13 more and get the AOF option and a name brand.

Any other suggestions or opinions on this assembly?

My adjuster broke after a year of riding, so I went to a plain SRP one same price and so far its been holding up great.

I have one that I put on last summer works great and I had an SRP before that and I think the MSR is smoother than the SRP. I asked Colby what was similar to the ASV without the $80 price tag and thats what he recommended to me.

I've been using that setup for a couple years, and I highly recommend it to anyone. Can't beat it for the price and no issues with it to date.

Oh and also, nobody has really answered one of my questions.

Will this work with my stock clutch cable? Do I have to do any modifications or adjustments?? Or does it go right on like stock? Thanks

It works with the stock cable. You will have to splice the clutch safety switch wires together.

I'm not really sure what you mean by it was getting harder to pull but that may be your cable messed up so if it doesn't seem easier once you get it try a new cable they are only like 15 bucks anyway.
I like mine to but I did something stupid replacing a snapped clutch cable and snapped the bolt holding the actual lever to the perch so I'm not sure what to do. Its a shouldered bolt and all so I may of f'ed up. So yea you'll like it just be careful about holding the top and bottom bolt on the actual lever.

Well, lets say more like, not as smooth as it used to be. But yea I will replace cable if it still feels the same. Which brings me to another question, can you "lube" the cable? with some kind of spray or something?

Ryan, im not sure what you mean by what you said, how did you break the bolt on the lever? im a little confused

Ok, sorry. Let me try again. There are three bolts on the perch two clamping it to the bars and one holding the actual lever to the perch. I was trying to take the lever off to put a new cable on and snapped the bolt in half.
Don't worry about it though you'll see what I'm talking about when you get it.
I kept turning the rachet even though it was very very tough so if it is hard, Stop.

While on topic of levers, does anyone know of some decent priced shorties? I don't know if I want to spend $125 for some ASVs.

Oh ok. So you were trying to put a new cable on an old perch?? So the bolt was real tight and stripped right off??

So in my case, if I need to replace my cable the bolt should come off easy since it is new right?

I broke one doing the same thing, but mine had been there for god knows how long.

Pro tip, if it starts to come out tight its time to get some PB blaster, freeze off spray, WD40, etc and let it soak a bit and work it back and forth, tightening then loosening till it brakes free. A little heat from a torch helps too.

But I shouldn't have no problem right? Im buying the clutch and perch new.

Or, wait........or are you guys talking about my STOCK bolt removal??

I have an AOF and I like it. It is smooth as silk with the stock cable.

Maybe your cable needs to be lubed. I got the cable lube kit from Rocky Mountain and it works great. I have also read where the clutch cable can be melted or heated up by the head pipe and cause the cable to get stiff. Check you clutch cable routing.

do you have to have one of those special things to lube the cable with??

It helps,, but you can do it without if you have the little straw that attaches to the nozzle.

Is there any way of testing my cable to see if I need to buy a new one? Should I disconnect the cable from lever and motor end and test free movement? It is a 01' model, so its 9 years old, and I have never replaced the cable. Would you just say buy a new one or what? thanks

Disconnect from each end and check the free play movement. You may need a new one. Mine is a 01 with the original cable and it is still in great shape, but I do meticulously maintain it.

This picture was taken last spring.

Ok. So I disconnected from both ends and I can move the cable by hand, but seems a little draggy. So my question is, just how "smooth" is the cable supposed to slide back and fourth?

Overall, I can pull the cable while disconnected fairly easy, but just seems to be a slight drag in there, not sure how smooth it supposed to be though

01 400EXer

There should be a very little drag.

CJM

Little to no drag at all, mine melted some time back and I bought an MSR, was like nite and day.

Does the msr aof lever make pull any easier? I have a brand new clutch cable but it's still way harder to pull than most clutch levers.

My AOF lever made the pull really easy compared to before and I thought it was easy prior to the new lever.

Odd, my 05 ex has always been the hardest to pull clutch of any bike I've ridden.

So how did it ever turn out. My lever has a lot of play up and down and so does my wife's so I thought about getting a new clutch lever and ditching the parking brake while Im at it.

whoops, sorry I didnt get back with this. Got the new MSR lever and perch installed along with a new clutch cable and WOW! night and day difference. I highly recommend this upgrade. really cleans up the bars too getting rid of the PB assembly.

Im very satisfied! :D
