Are there any differences in a 86-87 frame vs. a 88-89 frame? In the way the engine bolts to the frame?

yes! 86-87 had the rear motor mount attached to the swingarm. But on the 88-89, the mounts were run strait to the frame instead. If you do a search you may find some pics of the differences.

So I got an 87 frame but they welded in those rear engine mounts and they broke, should I re fabricate those mounts or should I buy a new swing arm and carrier and axle?

Which design is better?

either way is fine. i've got an 86 frame that has all 89 rear and have the rear mounted according and have been running it like that for atleast 11 year, no issues.

if you plan to run an 88-89 rear, i see no issues in repairing whats there. got a pic of the area?

Does your rear engine resemble the 88-89 mount? Y is it curved like it is?

The one on mine that broke was a straight pipe.

Is there a better design?

I plan on getting pics of everything this next week.

mine is straight across and was mocked up and welded in with the rear suspension inplace to clear the rear shock. we used square tubing thats the size of the OEM frame.

It looks to me like it's curved up on the left to clear the chain. Ideally the bar would probably be straight across just above the swingarm to stabilize the frame though as the leverage of the swingarm stresses the chassis.

yep you got the 87 frame with the new 88-89 style swinger, the mounts and welding could be done a lot better from what i see i would redo this for sure.. but its a good set-up and you dont really have to change it..

good greif, that looks nasty... but fixable. :) I would say they used the stock 86-87 piece and welded it in, and maybe thats not a very good strong design since the bottom motor mount broke off

off topic question, only the 86 TRX had the shark fin lower nose peice right? never understood why honda had the nubs on the 87 frame..

Ya its pretty nasty of a weld job. I bought the wheeler pretty cheap, trying to save one of these from the junk pile.

I talked to a guy that raced back in the day and he said his Lonestar and Leager frames didnt come with a rear engine mount. I havent seen the frames yet but y would there not be any, especially for racing? Is this guy full of crap or is he right?

I was looking at the way the engine mounts up to the rear. Why does the engine mount up on two bolts on rear for the 86-87 and one for the 88-89? Are the case different? Would my 87 work if i just made the cross brace in frame like the 88-89?

motors are the same, 85-89 cases all fit, even mismatching them. I wish I knew why honda used 2 rear mounts and switched to a single later on. Most of the aftermarket frames just use one rear mount and thats on the bottom tube.

I had an 87 with the same set up and tried what you have going on with yours. could never keep lower motor mounts or rear mounts from breaking. I took it to East Coast ATV, Chris Borich was doing some fab work for them at the time, he removed the cross piece re-done the lower mounts and added another set on the tube were your foot pegs mount and gusseted several other locations on the frame and also added a piece of round tubing were the swing arm bolt goes thru on both sides, similar to how leager does there frames and that took care of the sub frame crack like you have. The frame actually felt more ridged and i never had any more trouble with cracks or breaks. Also with the 250r good shock set up is also critical on the stock frames.

wild250rman- Do you have any pics of what your mounts look like?

earlier this guy said he got it to work.
