i just bought a used 2005 400ex i only had it out once and stoped after about a hour and a half b/c this odd ticking sound was started to get louder. it not really a knocking sound just a constant tick. after i got it home i was looking it over and i pulled the dip just to have oil pour out the the oil tank not just trickle pour and at this point the engine was well cool so i am going to start by doing a GOOD oil change but i think i might have messed something up by riding it so any suggestions

adjust the valves check your timing chain tensioner and if all thats good a stretched timing chain will also cause it to make a ticking noise

yeah dude, check your valves, and timing chain. I got my tick down to about as quiet as its going to get , it took adjusting the valevs a few times, use the pre-bent feeler guages get the screw loose and adjust it so that it drags a bit on the feeler, keep the feeler in place white tightening the nut and feel the slight drag again to make sure its proper. all should be well. I have always been told that ticking is what they do and when it stops then you should worry.

i type like a 2 year old....sorry.lol
