You're looking for a VERY rare item. I saw one sell on eBay a few months ago, and it was like new. It didn't go for anywhere near as much as I expected though. Good luck in your search.

Here's the pic of another style. I thought these were just add-ons to the stock bumper, but the one pictured on the 88 looks like it's all one piece. The one in my pic is on an 89 250R with a stock bumper and the HRC add-on.

is it Norm Bish on a Brockway Honda i believe. bumpers, grab bars, handle bars would all be simple things to reproduce. look at the 67-69 camaro you can now buy almost every piece aftermarket. maybe one day the "R" could be the same way.

It is Norm. That picture was taken about three years ago. Norm owns a Honda dealership and I'm sure he's got a warehouse full of NOS parts lying around. I know he bought up all the Ohtsu Pro-Comps that Honda had just before they were discontinued.

thanks. that is a sweet 89 you have. my wife almost had me convinced I should sell it. I would definetly have regreted that. I had an 86 I bought off addictedtomud a few years back. thought i had to sell to buy equipment for my business. what a mistake!

That is #651, Norm Bish, former GNCC Pro and owner of Brockway Honda. He still runs Pro Comps and is one of the few left to still have them. Anymore pics like these?

I wonder who built his motors, exhaust and suspension when he raced pro? and since that pic is only 3 years old is that the same "R"he raced then? always wondered were the racers bikes go when they are finished with them.

Most, like mine, were sold and eventually parted. I believe Kellner still has a few of Hawk's old bikes. Hawk Sr still has his "yellow" R. Dains may still have his. Holbert's are all gone.

In Bish's time, the R's were surprisingly stock at the GNCC's. Major upgrades would have been aftermarket front shocks, usually WP or Ohlins. It wasn't until Sloan and then Hawk that the R's became more aftermarket.

I'm not 100% sure if that's his old race bike in the picture. If not, it's along the same lines, even down to his trademark #651.

Norm races the same class at the CRA races as I do. I got to talkng with him one day about the set-up on that quad. There is surprisingly very little done to the motor, if what he told me is true. He claims a stock cylinder and porting, but I know it runs VERY well. It even has a stock pipe. Another guy in our class runs a basically stock YFZ, and he said Norm walks away from him in the open field sections.

I do remember now in the late 80's and early 90's when pro's did run basically stock atv's, at such races as blackwater hardrock and other local gncc races I would attend. I went to snowshoe last year and was amazed how woods racing had changed and when you would hear 1 four stroke among all the 2 strokes, now it is just the opposite. Where is the series you mentioned run and could you give me some kind of schedule if possible. would like to attend a couple of races and maybe run a few.

Anybody running the HRC front white numberplate/hood/headlight delete???

I got this NOS Hondaline light cover/#plate off eBay a couple years ago. Just put it on to get a feeler of it's looks on my future '89 resto project.
Here's another rare Hondaline headlight guard. I just won it off eBay last week (for the '88-'89 Rs). Never saw one before and had to double check the '89 Hondaline accessory brochure to see if it was truly even a Hondaline item. Yep, it is and dang rare! Anyone else have one of the "Aero" nose covers or one of these little grill guards??

Looks like you got a hold of a nice 89 to restore. The light cover looks good on it. I want to do my 88 with a retro XC look nose cover, hondaline add on front bumper, and pro-comp 301 rear and 101 fronts. Something different but still OEM.
Was told once there were only 8500 or so of the add on bumpers ever made.

Anybody else that has one of these: I have 2 questions

#1 Is the word "competition" misspelled on your hood?

#2 What do the little tabs in the front hook to? Are you supposed to cut slits in your nose piece?

k10seibel
04-14-2010, 09:07 PM
Yes, that's another spelling error. Look at the air box lid on the '88-'89. The instruction label has motor spelled wrong. "moter" You are correct on the slit holes for the little tabs. I'll post the instalation instructions later. -Andy

1718108668Those are indeed hard to find bumpers! I found mine picking a house of parts here in Az but be aware if you allegedly find one Hondaline also produced one for I beleive a 300ex quad same year!
Previous owner welded those tabs to install a license plate but I intalled to make sure it was for a 88-89 trx 250r and it fit!
