It's not pulling at all when you give it full throttle? When was the last time you checked your clutches?

Without being there to feel what it's doing, it's hard to pinpoint the problem. I would start by checking the clutches to make sure they are in good condition, and not slipping.

Is it smoking at all? Do you still have the parking brake on, by chance?

The clutches aren't that expensive. If the basket is grooved though, it may be a little more.

Your best bet would to get a service manual, and do the work yourself. It will tell you how to do everything on the bike, step-by-step. Just search for 400ex service manual on ebay. They are very helpful.

I've never replaced the clutches on a 400ex, but I've always had the best luck out of stock components on my 450.

check the cable adjusters at both places see if the helps
one on the bars and one down by the clutch lever
that might need adj
but it does tend to have the clutch plates go in the higher gears is were youll notice it first
