whats the benefit, and how does it work?

It works by advancing and retarding the ignition, basically it moves the pulse generator to several degrees to either side of the point where the flywheel triggers it. This can made more low end(usually advancing) or more explosive power hit helping top end(usually retarding). Keep in mind both mid-extremes can cause pre-detonation and require race gas. Its complex to figure out, your compression, squish and port timing come into play also. It should be left to someone who knows the porting, carb, reeds, pipe and setup of the head.
