View Full Version : Apex steering stem

I am attaching a couple pics of what I did to "fix" the stock Apex steering stem. My son had bent his where the tie rods attach a couple of times due to crashes. I cut a piece of 1/4" plate steel to size, bent it and shaped it to fit then welded it on and redrilled the holes. I would like it to look nicer, but it will work. I used a jig saw, grinder and a $100 Sears arc welder to do this, it aint pretty, but it should do the trick.

You can see where it was bent and had actually cracked, I am glad he didn't race on it again.

now you can see how much thicker it is, it always bugged me that it was so thin, the tie rod went right through and the nut was up so far that the cotter key didn't even engage the castle nut, now it does.

we had something similar happen, he got hit in the wheel and folded the plate over on the stem and when we straightened it it cracked. We just had DC build us a new Chromo stem.
