Ok guys, getting an 07 crf250r motor with carb and electronics this weekend, i am gonna plant it in my 250x frame.

so far i have bought the following

yfz radiator-$55 shipped
05 crf250r exhaust system-$ 60 shipped

This week i fixed the swingarm pivot bolt, i still have to box it in.I am going to use the swingarm i have, and chop the middle out to accept the motor.

Here is what inspired me

will get pics this weekend when i pick up the motor

very nice! do you have anymore pics of that other one? im gonna be doing the same thing... some time... hopefully!

born2ride14
03-13-2010, 07:26 AM
no other pics. but the motor i got last night was seized, so i am returning it today. I set it in the frame, to see what it looked like, and i defenatley need to move the upper left frame rail. I am going to buy a 86 87 style 250 swingarm and build a bracket to hold the motor just like the 250r is set up.

woodsracer144

where did you get the motor from? what frame rail do you have to move?

jonboy

I would love to see this build. I had thought of doing this one myself except using the crf250x version and using the dual exhaust. I thought it would be a very unique build.

born2ride14
03-13-2010, 02:38 PM
i got the motor from yz426ex36

he refunded me my money now i am looking for a new motor.

The upper left frame rail has to be moved to the left like 3 inches to get clearance for the head.

The build will continue, just waiting on a motor

woodsracer144
03-15-2010, 12:03 PM
are you forsure just going to use a crf? cause if you use the crf i might try a yzf or a kxf... something else... i dont really care what you use, i just thought i would run something else so were a little different...

born2ride14
03-15-2010, 12:10 PM
right now i am leaning toward a kxf motor, but i am no sure yet

are you going to have the welds inspected? since its frame rails and box tube, it would be a good idea. as a precaution. you hit a jump and upon landing the frame buckles it could cause some serious injuries.

sorry if i sound like the fun police.

no offense but would a 400ex frame be better suited for handling etc, i had a 250x and the 400 way out handled it and its got so much more aftermarket support for chassis mods like aarms swingarms shocks

i think its a great build, im doing a crf450 and i thought about the 250 but im a big guy and think it might be underpowered for me but if i was buying a bike it would be the 250
congrats on originality but i would re think the frame

main reason im useing the 300ex 250x chassis and all that is because they are so easy to throw around... i can whip them around like nothing, the 400ex is a tank compaired to the 300ex 250x...

i hear that i had a built 250x back in 97 that was a 350 and i could whip it around like it was nothing,
i didnt know how much hp that crf engine would put out so weight is an issue,

did u see that ktm frame with the crf250r engine in it
i think ct did it

no. just wondered. its something id have looked into first. dont want to be usen wrought iron. but dont want to much carbon in it. you want it to flex but be hard.

oh, most the stuf is like a 1020- 1080 or like a A 36 mild steel. i'll get that book i have and get back to you on it. i think its 1040... most the mild steels around will be about the same, it also depends on if you have a hot rolled or cold rolled...

04-13-2010, 07:22 AM
If you want to do this project a whole lot easier, use an 89, 250r based frame, with a rmz, kfx, yfz,or ktm motor. They are almost a perfect fit, and there is no frame cutting. pictures are at kidsonquads.com readers rides section.

born2ride14

No pics, but i forgot to tell you guys that i dropped the quad off on saturday to MILD TO WILD RACING to get the motor mounted in the frame. Should get that back in 2 weeks or so. I ordered my custom throttle cable from motion pro, If you guys need a custom cable Toby @ Motion pro is the guy to talk to. Ordered some exhaust stock to lengthen the stock headpipe From JEGS, That should be here thursday. I took the Reel out of the carb to get to the main spring. The spring unmodified would be really stiff on thumb throttle, so i took it out heated it up and worked the spring. I eventually got the spring weaker to where it was equal resistance to the 400ex carb i was using.

Got everything hooked up, but its acting like its too lean . give it a few pumps od gas and it will start for 2 sec then dies

jonboy
05-09-2010, 11:01 PM
Prolly is lean. You've reconfigured the intire intake setup vs. when it was on the bike so the jetting it had isnt going to work. You may have to toy with the jetting. Be sure to do the o ring mod on the AP lever. Also may need to get a smaller leak jet to compensate for the longer intake run.

lkrislong
05-13-2010, 12:58 AM
i see you didnt cut the swingarm to fit the engine in? i never understood why they do that. we are just finishing our daughters trx90/crf150r hybrid looks like we ran into some of the same things you did. just asking do you think you should try to rework the upper motor mount so the carb will fit on the head. our tank was in the way so our frame builder made a really trick mount to space our carb back but we had to heat up the tank and remold it to get the carb back on the head. the head has the flang that mates up to the carb make it really hard to come off. once you start jumping the carb would work its way loose

May help out with the tuning, and get ya away from the long intake tube.
They make them with different angled mounting tubes.

the longer intake tube should not effect his jetting id think, i know intake tube length and intake manifold length all affect power but he could simply unhook his airboot and rip it around the street and see if it made a difference

188racing
05-15-2010, 12:43 PM
post a vid of you on a track!!! its sweet man

jonboy
05-15-2010, 02:02 PM
Yeah the intake tube will affect the jetting a bit. The longer tube creates disturbed air velocity that generally requires more fuel to atomize correctly. A clamp on pod will give higher volumes of air but it doesnt get disturbed and forced in like the tube setup. The longet head to carb boot will affect it as well but it will also give a higher torque curve than a short boot. Which should make it pull like crazy. It might be worth it to look into getting the largest UNI filter for the 400ex and a intake boot from a Bombardier DS650 which is tapered to give more airflow.

Unless that pic was ur little brother working on ur quad (haha) which Im guessing it was you. If ur not heavy enough to compress the rear shock ur chain will drag on the chain guide until it is cut in two. I had to lower the back of mine down. btw you did a nice job on ur quad.

Glad I could take a look at it this weekend. It is done very cleanly and does not sound like it's only a 250 hiding in there.:macho

How much did this build cost im looking to build a hybrid but still not sure if i want to build or just buy. Do you think the ex frame is the easiest to use or would a blaster with a 250f motor be easier. just trying to get as much info as possible before i start my own?
