So I'm getting some subs, should I go 15 or 18"? What would the differences be between the sizes? More/less punch & spl? Should I go with a sealed/ported enclosure, or even maybe bandpass? I need some advice please. :)

Looking back now I wish I would have saved all the money I spent on subs and crap when I was younger.....serious answer. :D

ETA: But I'll probably say the same about quad parts when Im older.

That all depends on what you want from your subs.... More cone area = more bass. If you're doing a bandpass I hope you have time and money to build 3 or more boxes as they take precise tuning to sound good.

depends on what car your putting them in, what is your budget, and what kind of clarity are you expecting? proper install and set up have more to do with good sound than people think.

ur better off doin a few 12's but out of the two id do 15's, but do a ported box, it dont matter what you buy the box is what makes it sound good

legit answer: take that 1000 bucks and put it in a CD at your bank, and let it sit for 3 to 5 years or longer

or put it in a savings and save it for a rainy day cause they will come, trust me

but if you have to have a system just get a nice kicker 10 or 12 and a kicker amp, can get all that for 400 to 500 easily

if you aren't going to competitions why even put a 15 or 18 in your vehicle? do you want to hear it rattle apart (most annoying sound in the world)

look for low frequency response(20Hz to 25Hz) and a high dB response(80dB or higher)

crutchfield has been running sales on some excellent rated sub speakers.(buy 1 get 1 free, etc)
even if you dont buy from them, their reviews and recommendations are a big plus..

the advantage to larger speakers is the capability of really low frequency response, so 20Hz comes easy for 12's and 15's..

dont forget to match the ohms rating of the speaker to the amp.. (2ohm vs 4ohm) and mind how you configure them to be sure you end up with the right impedance(ohms)

no offense but if your going to waste 1k on a sub!? i hope you have it in every car for the rest of your life.

1k! for a sub really!!!!????

Did i mention it pisses people off to hear you bumping and rattling? or maybe it's just me . we put $100 into a sub with a homemade box in my bud's accord and i still feel like it was wasted id rather have speaker than a sub

I'll probably pick up two CV 15's and put them in a GroundShaker dual ported box. That will only be $450 at the max, I already have the system to power the drivers. By the way, my '10 Taurus sho is solid and doesn't make vibration noises. The amp I have has a distortion rate of .02 so it will be crisp, clean bass.:muscle:

$1000 seems like a little excessive. Unless your a real audio-guru or plan on competing with it.

I've upgraded the sound system in both vehicles I've owned. In my current car(rsx) I've got a 450w amp and two 10" subs. It makes mirrors vibrate and thumps on your chest. I bought the amp years ago for my previous car for like $150, and I found the subs+box on craigslist for $40. So that's enough power to be vibrating side mirrors for under $200.

So unless you know for a fact that you won't be happy without a $1000 sound system I'd suggest aiming a little bit lower, and see if you'd still like to move up.

Hi fonics makes a good amp. My current setup is two kicker l7's 12 in. Cvx's
And a hifonics 2000 mono block amp. In a sealed box.
In an ext. Cab Chevy pick up.

All of this cost me about 500.

They are amazing they are just right at normal volume and really start to pound once you crank it.

From my experience sealed boxes are better for rock and up beat country.
Ported is for rap and I had a hard time adjusting my amp to play rock clear in a sealed box.

And band pass forget that.

Just don't crank your subs up so that's all you can hear is the bass.

The garage door method as I call it now. Working on my friends S13 the one day we were talking about stupid things people do to cars and we got into what some people call a system and its just adding subs with ****ty factory speakers. He then goes to the garage door and starts singing then starts banging on the door, says a few words, bangs on the door. Its so true I rode in a car and the bass would drown out the highs so when it came time for bass int eh song thats all you heard. Its hilarious.

Back on topic... JL makes a great subwoofer! Kicker is good but a little overrated IMO. I'm actually going to be replacing my 2 12" Kicker CVR's with just 1 JL W3V3 10". They hit extremely hard for their size and take up very little space. The required box size is much less with the JL vs Kicker of the same size. BTW Kicker are buy one get one on Crutchfield right now in the CVR. Great deal if you ask me but I'll buy one and not know what to do with the other lol

I'm trying to keep the wattage low, like 500 peak per sub. It sounds kinda dumb but my amp puts out only an 800w total. So really, the most bang for buck fits my profile right now. I was thinking 2 Cerwin Vega 15's inside this box http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_20151_Ground_Shaker_HBP215.aspx what ya think?

go with 10's or 12's. 15's are just silly.

dude, kicker comp cvr 12's in a ported box. Got that setup off of ebay for $260 shipped, both subs brand new in the box and the box was $60 shipped from pandorabox or something like that off of ebay. It would bounce a full water bottle about an inch off the trunk lid of my 01 mustang GT (yes i have eye witnesses) and my car didnt rattle at all, tight bass inside the car and still some room in the trunk left. I had a punch 700s on them. Now i put the amp in my truck and am getting a probox put behind the back seat

I can't justify spending that much, of course, im cheap. When I feel like I need something in one of my vehicles, they have some hifonics 12s on ebay, you can get two of them brand new for $62.00 shipped to your house :) and find a decent used amp in your area (around here they have decent ones for $50-$100), and there is a budget system lol (they honestly sound as good as my girls two jlw3 12s). She has a punch 900, and I had a punch 500

craigslist is where the deals are at, i've been through about 10 different set ups, and MADE money off each one. Ranging from 10's to 15's and i have found to like the 10's best, seem to give a nice crisp clear bass where as the 15's are just for silly loud bass

seems like the people here think when its used, it is worth more for some reason:rolleyes: (craigslist)

man honestly, it depends on the speakers, amps, box and air space of the vechicle. what are you looking for, cuz my friend is selling his system:

2- dd195z 18"
8- lunar5oo's
3-alternators
4- yellow top batteries
full 00 gauge wire se
flip out screen
and a huges *** wall box that fits in a nissan hard body

he wants 10,000 for everything. there is 15-17000 invested. it hits 154.1db and is the top truck around this area of town.

the box is built out of double thick 3/4"mdf, and fiberglassed. also has 1" threaded rod holding the box from flexxing.

but it depend on the money ya wanna spend, type of box, watts, and vechicle size.

can you give me specs of what your looking at, and what you wanna put it in.

also, bandpass is not that great of a box, if it is not built properly, then you smoke a woofer easily. and if they bottom out, then you will not here them. this will lead to frying a coil due to over excursion.

I used to go to la dunes quite often, but haven't been in a couple years. I am bikeless at the moment, but am looking for something cheap to mess around on, whether it's a dirtbike or what. I keep searching craigslist hoping to find a good deal, but there don't seem to be any..at all
