A few months back we had the idea of building up a quad from scratch and had intended on using a Honda 450R. The winter was busy and the right deal just never seemed to fall into place.

In the meantime, it had been kicked around that we should use the YFZ450 due to its popularity and proven successfullness when used in various types of racing and it would ofer us the sme flow of parts used and new that the Honda would have.

I had all but given up on the idea seeing we hadnt located a starting platform when today a deal fell in my lap I couldnt pass up. It is an 05 YFZ and will serve as the base for a rebuild.

:macho Any details? XC or MX?

It isnt without flaws, but at the $1200 price I was able to negotiate, I feel it has alot to offer.

It has a new cylinder and head and runs very strong. A new clutch is there as well and shifting is smooth so it appears we wil not have to dig into the engine which should save us a chunk of change.

A full HMF exhaust is installed, brand new Kenda rear tires, however the fronts are onion skins. Just afew parts that can be sold off to help fund new parts if we dont salvage them.

Cody had just mentioned yesterday that if he had his way he would like to build an older YFZ for XC so maybe some karma is at play:p

Plans right now have the quad heading to my brothers to be stripped and then the rebuild can begin.

The fenders are not cracked, seat isnt ripped but the right lower arm needs replacing.

For many, this would be a $2500 buy and with some elbow grease, a few ebay items and some wrench work, would serve as a great quad for recreational riding.

I wont make any promises as to what the end result will be. If everyone is still onboard for offering services and some parts, I will give the go ahead to dive into it. If they arent interested, I could easily part it out and make some coin or clean it up and sell it as a running unit.

I will keep ya posted

Kenny,

I have a few YFZ parts laying around that I would be glad to throw in a box for you guys to use. It's mostly brake pads, cdi boxes, sprockets, etc - all used but in good condition.

$1200? HOLY CRAP!!!

In Ontario you can't even get a damn warrior for less than $2500!

Thats a heck of a deal, great buy for sure.

If you're just gonna junk those front tires PM me, I'd possibly be interested. I cut and shave them down for mohawk or smooth buffs for sand and I've been wanting to do another set.

Most people have a tough time believing these are homemade. :D

Cody has 3 college courses this year and on fridays he has lab work which is almost impossible to make up so he cant make as many races as he would like. He still wants to run a few Nat's for fun and a few locals. Thats the main reason we backed off the build earlier this fall when we first laid it out, I do not want sponsors not getting 110% from us so I felt much better by not going forward. The economy is picking up some so I will re-contact them and see what they think, they were all ready to go even though we did not intend on racing a full schedule but to me it wasnt fair to them.

Haha it would be gone within a day EASILY.

I'm trying to find myself a project quad... just can't locate anything in Ontario worthwhile for a decent price. Really want an LT250R quadracer, cheapest one that didn't run in the GTA was $1200 I think :huh . Looked down at the classifies in detroit, you can get a recently PC'd frame w/ a-arms, front shocks, and some other pieces for $150, an engine (needs assembly) for $150, and plastics, FMF pipe, nerfs, and rear swingarm/shock for like $200.

I had a 92 LT years ago..... was a fun bike.

I know a guy selling a 2009 YFZ 450 , fully race ready if you're interested .. he wants $10 000:rolleyes:

But yeah , project are hard to find. Someone down near Niagara ( he's a member on here) had an aftermarket framed TRX 250R and a Hybrid 4 strike for sale ... not sure if he still has them though. I think the 250R was going for around $3500 but had a bog in the engine.

this will be a very cool build imo
hopefully its a xc/play bike and not a full tilt mx quad

the 04-05 yfz450's are overlooked
but they are tanks(trust me), and hey they started it all
tons of newer year upgrades bolt right on and
even aftermarket parts are pretty cheap for these now

go for it

Hey Pappy, do you know if it's possible to fix a tweaked YFZ frame. I went for a bit of a tumble during practice at the Walden NEATV race that you and Harlen were at last season. We already replaced the frame with a used one we picked up for only $200 (apparently nobody else wanted a bright orange frame:rolleyes: ), so I'm just wondering if the frame is worth anything or we should just scrap it. Do you want it?

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this YFZ project. I have two YFZs, a largely stock 2005 and a 2008 that I bought already fully built.

One of my brothers ended up taking it to build for his wife. But then he had a great offer on it, sold it and bought a newer model, so we built that one LOL!

its weird how i bring a post back

and u get these these replies, lol

and yes that yfz might b pretty

but pretty dont mean fast kids

i know old vet riders on 400ex's in md
that can roll with pro gncc riders, yes!!!
they just ride for fun and dont want to spend
the thousands a year it cost to race the series

Pappy, do you have more pics of that orange one? I want to do my bike with orange but am unsure of how to lay out the color scheme. I was initially thinking white plastics, orange frame & lower a-arms, white upper a-arms, orange swinger...... But that YFZ looks so sexy I need more pics and color info if you'd dish it out. ;)

I havent taken any pics of his quad lately, but here are a few from the original build. He had cracked his frame so we re-did it, then he rebuilt the motor and we shot the new engine to match the old one etc.
