Here is my 01 Lt80 just how it was when I bought it except for the missing heel guards and the z400 front bumper.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/c845a67d.jpg

I bought this bike for $175.00 thinking the motor was locked up. When I got it home and started tearing it down, I noticed the drive belt was broke and wadded up on the front clutch pulley. Once I put a new belt on it and lubed everything up and added fresh gas, it fired right up and ran great.

I wanted a little taller handle bars so I shortened some factory z400 bars that I had lying around and put them on. Then I didn't like the white wheels so I had to paint them black.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/ff42ad9f.jpg

I replaced the factory vaccum operated fuel petcock with one from a Lt160 so I could turn the gas off when I want to, then I added a Nitro Circus decal to the nose piece and 2in spacers all around to make it a bit more stable.

This is an awesome pit bike and my 4yr old nephew gets alot of use out of it too. It has great power for what it is, but I would like to get a little more out of it ( you know how that works). I am wanting a K&N filter for it and I would also like to go next size over bore and shave the head a bit for more compression. I'm planning on disconnecting the automatic oiler and start mixing fuel myself for it. I am also planning on modding the clutches a bit to give it a little more stall. I wish I has a blue nose, seat, and tank for it to match my 250 but oh well.

I'd stick with a foam filter.

wow, I wish we were in the same state, I want both of mine black. I don't dig the blue, it looks more purple the wife said... nooooo on painting the bumper lol. I usually black things out, but not aluminum or was is just painted steel? nice bike either way :)

f150dan

It was painted steel

did you have to weld tabs or bend the mounts? it's off a full sized bike right?

f150dan
03-14-2010, 09:14 AM
Yea, it's off a z400. I had to spread out the bottom of the bumper just slightly to make it bolt up to the 80 frame. I did have to weld some tabs for the upper mounts though.

gonna try to get some stockers off a large bike too. getting a grab bar too I think while I'm at it. stock take offs on ebay probably... just to make it look nicer for the bumper, grab bar my stock one is torn off :(

I just placed an order with bikebandit for all new brake and throttle cables for this bike along with a few misc bolts, seals and a K&N filter.

Go to
www.motorsportssupercenter.com
Tell me how much you could have saved. I'd like to know.
Did you get an outerwear for the K&N?

f150dan
04-16-2010, 09:33 AM
Ok I will do that. And yea I got an outerwear for it. I know you guys suggest foam filters but I have always had great luck out of K&N's and run them on everything. I think some people have problems with them because they don't know how to properly service them.

f150dan

I am in the process of modding the clutches on this bike now. I don't have a scale accurate enought to weigh the clutch shoes so I took them off and hauled them to my machine shop guy Dave. I am lightening them to 180 grams and pulling 2 rollers out of the front clutch. I will let you guys know how it turns out along with the new K&N filter. I hope to see some performance increases. I wanted to go head and shave the head 0.030 but will just have to wait til a later date for that.

LT80
04-22-2010, 05:00 PM
Dave can't do the head too??:)

f150dan
04-23-2010, 12:57 AM
Yea he can and will, but I didn't get a new head gasket when I ordered all that other stuff and my nephew wants to ride it Saturday so I really just don't have time to shave the head right now. I hope to do it very soon though.

I might just pull the jug at the same time and get that work done too. I haven't decided yet if I should just go next size overbore or use that 96cc piston I hear people talking about. I've read mixed reviews on it but I do understand that if I go big bore I just need the piston and not the sleeve too. It's hard not to do it since it will probably cost the same

LT80
04-23-2010, 07:29 AM
I don't recommend the 54mm piston (96cc's) for reliability reasons. But that's me.
FYI: You can re-use the head gasket. :)

f150dan
04-23-2010, 01:03 PM
Ok I though I could reuse the head gasket but my luck, I would tear it or something. Lol

what kind of piston do you recommend then, wiesco or what?

LT80
04-23-2010, 06:41 PM
I use Suzuki pistons till the bore goes to 1.5 +. Then we use Wiseco's.
Zuki only makes a .5 and 1.0..

f150dan
04-23-2010, 11:55 PM
Are Wiesco pistons higher cmpression the factory Suzuki pistons?

LT80
04-24-2010, 07:29 AM
I don't think so.

f150dan
04-25-2010, 01:01 PM
Clutch mods are done and installed. I'm still waiting on my bike bandit order though. Once it gets here, I can put the clutch cover back on, install new cables and new air filter and try this thing out. I'm assuming I will have to mess with the carb a bit but I will try it out and see first.

f150dan
05-15-2010, 10:43 PM
After I moved the the clip on the needle a few notches to fatten it up a bit with the K&N filter, it seems to have more bottom end grunt now and I like the clutch mods but I reinstalled the 2 rollers and got better results for now. the lt160 fuel petcock has started leaking when in the off position so I'm going to try to rebuild and reinstall the factory vaccum operated petcock. And the bike is still hard to start when cold. I've got to choke it and hold the bike WOT until it starts to hit. Usually takes about 30 sec or so before it will start. I let off and let the starter cool down periodically too. What do you think the problem is? How should I change the jetting to help it fire up or what could the problem be?

I don't really think it's jetting because it used to start great. It's just got me puzzled right now.

I got 2 new tires for this bike.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/7ec76279.jpg

16x6.5x8 shredder's. I would have bought 4 but my local atv shop only had these 2 and said they were discontinued. Anybody know where to get 2 more?

Also, at the atv junkyard he had a front set of yellow fenders for the lt80 that was cracked on one side. I got them for $5.00 and made race cuts out of them.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/04944b88.jpg

And recently found another '96 lt80 for $100 that I just couldn't pass up so drug it in too lol

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/a1820a20.jpg

Here is a pic of both my lt80's with my buddy Kendall's ATC70 w/ 140cc 4-speed

They are great tires!!! AND discontinued..:(
Please contact keith Little. He's working for GBC (the ppl that makes the shredder).
He's a MX'er and I explained to him how these was a good tire and how much the mini world needs them or similiar.
There was no better tire IMO that tne NanKang that we haven't seen in years. Till the shredder that is..

Or hopefully at the GBC tire site.

I keep seeing china knock-off bikes with holeshot lookalike front tires. I want some. I've saw them in 18x6.5x8 and 19x6x8. They were made by Far East tire company and Karet Tire but I can't figure out how or where to order them. They would look so good on my 80's. The look just like holeshot frOnt tires for full size bikes. Anybody got any suggestions

f150dan
09-04-2011, 02:07 PM
I got a new set of front tires for the Lt80.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/7df40058.jpg

I found them at flea market for $10 and couldnt pass them up. They are 4.80x8 Snow Traks and seem to match the rears fairly good. They give this bike that "race" look I've been wanting for my nephew.

LT80
09-04-2011, 03:19 PM
Looks good. :)
Do they say who makes them?
They heavy?

f150dan
09-04-2011, 05:14 PM
Thanks. They aren't heavy at all. I'm not sure who makes them. I'll check.

They are too narrow for the wheels but I mounted them anyway. They'll work fine but I'm eventually gonna cut and narrow the 2 front wheels 1-1.25in. to help the looks. They should get a bit taller then too. They measure 17in unmounted. Not sure what they are now but look just slightly taller then the 16 shredders.

f150dan
09-05-2011, 07:53 AM
I looked all over them and couldn't find a manufacturer anywhere. All they say is Snow Traks. They are 2-ply and are very soft.

I saw on net where Carlisle Snow Hog's are available in this size too and look similar.

f150dan
09-11-2011, 08:20 AM
Since the yellow 80 is slowly turning into a "race style" quad, my nephew still wants to play in woods and mud and other stuff like that so that's where the white 80 comes in. Stock airbox so no worries in mud or water and setting at stock height for more ground clearance.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/fd90d585.jpg

I added these tires for more traction. I know they are "knock-off" tires but I found them at a yard sale for $15 so couldn't pass them up. He will definitely be able to sling mud with them. I still need a new blue seat cover for this bike. Then I'm going to paint the purple nose piece and tank blue.

f150dan
09-11-2011, 04:15 PM
What all do I need to convert the yellow 80 over to pullstart? I am wanting to do this when I remove the oil pump and tank to save weight. I'm also thinking about ordering the smaller chain with high speed gearing and chain tensioner. Also gonna remove two roller's out of front clutch again since rear clutch shoes are already lightened to 180 grams. I wanna try that setup again with these smaller tires.

Lt80, what would you charge for fresh bore and P&P? What all would u want me to send u?

f150dan
10-10-2011, 05:59 PM
after installing the skinny tires on the front of the yellow 80, the rear looks like it's wider now. It shouldn't be though because I'm running 2in spacers all around. The lug studs on these spacers are quite a bit longer and still had a bunch of room left outside the lugnut so I added 1/4in. spacers to the front as well. It still needs a little bit more to look right but atlases it's a little better now.

Eventually, I'm going to try to cut and lengthen the A-arms to get rid of spacers all together on front and then get aftermarket axle for the rear.

f150dan
10-16-2011, 03:17 PM
made a little progress on the white 80 today. I painted the purple tank and nose piece blue. Now waiting on a blue seat cover.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/65b1a363.jpg

then painted number plate on nose

also painted the clutch inspection cover blue today. Now Im gonna paint all four wheel hubs blue then get the front fenders back on. This bike is still loose all over lol so I need to get a complete bearing kit for it as soon as I got the extra cash.

f150dan
10-19-2011, 11:12 AM
installed clutch inspection cover today then painted hubs blue and painted wheels white.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/6cbcf5b7.jpg

then decided to pull off and the chain guard blue too

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/5d176179.jpg

I'm slowly getting this bike the way I want it.

f150dan

A buddy of mine at work just bought a little fourwheeler for his daughter and decided on this.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/b6f4554a.jpg

It's a Monsoon 90 we think is made by Yerf Dog. It seems like a copy of the Lt80 to me except the engine is alot further coward in chassis (almost under handlebars) and it has an actual swingarm.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/45c1c016.jpg

It also has rear (manual) disc brakes

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/a36efab7.jpg

I'm wonder if I can get these parts and convert my yellow 80 to rear disc just because I like the looks alot better lol. Also, the monsoon uses 4 lug hubs that I would like to try to fit on the yellow 80. Again just for looks. I'll see if I can find a parts bike to steal stuff from and try out.

LT80
10-19-2011, 04:29 PM
The 2 machines are warp years apart.
I considered making a disc brake and spent some time on it.
After figuring out the cost and trouble, I realized that there isn't a problem with the stock brakes. :)
You can get Kasea hubs (fronts anyways), they have 4 lugs and fit right on the LT80 spindles.

f150dan
10-23-2011, 01:27 PM
Today, after fooling around in the garage a while, I straightened the original front bumper from the yellow 80 and got it installed on the white 80.

f150dan
11-05-2011, 05:36 PM
I went to the ATV salvage yard today and got 2 rubber hub cover, 1 rubber foot peg, 2 extra wheels, and a blue tank for the white 80.

f150dan
11-09-2011, 06:36 PM
I pulled the shocks off this white 80 today. I separated them, cleaned them up and then painted the springs blue. I'm happy with the outcome.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc308/f150dan/ATV/a24c2bb1.jpg

I still got alot of work and cleaning to do on this bike but I'm slowly hacking away at it.

Lately, Grayson has been complaining about not being able to sling donuts as easy since I put the shredders on his bike. I had these 16x6.5x8 lawn mower front tires lying in garage so decided to mount them up on the spare wheels I got from salvage yard. He can slide all he wants to now and them I'll change them out when he wants to go somewhere lol

I wonder how much work it would be to hard mount the engine and add a swing arm to a lt80?

LT80
12-12-2011, 08:42 AM
At that point, you find a kasea/eton/apex/etc. :)

f150dan
12-12-2011, 06:32 PM
yea too much work I would think. Just get a Monsoon or what Lt80 said if that's what you really want.

Speaking of hard projects though, I'm thinking about bringing in a 3rd lt80 to try and install a Polaris 250 2-stroke engine. Not sure if I can make it work but gonna do more research and give it a shot.

LT80

It's the frame that's holding back both projects. :(

Today at work, I sanded down and powder coated the front bumper yellow. It's not exact match because it's JD yellow, but close enough. After holiday's I'm going clean up and powder coat the heel guards as well.

the Monsoon 90 has a normal exhaust. You have been busy. What kind of paint did you use for the wheels? I used brake caliper paint on the blank pull start cover and the paint is already chipping. So I left the wheels alone.

LT80
12-26-2011, 10:42 AM
I use Krylon or Rust-oleum.

f150dan
12-26-2011, 11:20 AM
Yea, I get great results out of Krylon Rust Tough.

If you sand and clean the part good, spray paint should last a while.

I'm in process of building an oven right now to start my own powder coating setup at home. I should be able to do whole frames shortly with a very durable coating.

LT80
12-26-2011, 12:00 PM
COOL!!!
JB racing did the same.
Started with the "harbor freight" (or similiar) cheap-o powder coat kit.
Got a cpl old elec ovens and a metal enclosure and zippedy do, a powder coating oven.
OSHA didn't even mess with him about it.
I see he's worked up to a more industrial type of powder coat spraying equipment but he could as he's saved hundreds and hundreds of dollars doing it himself.
Now you'll need a sand blaster. :)

LMAO..I remember I bought my porting tools. $200.
Then I needed a right angle handpiece to do transfer ports..$350!
The wife asked me if I could make money now. I replied, I need a lathe..
It don't end...:D :D :D
