ticking topend

Ok, so I just got a 400ex for cheap because the original owner said that he rebuilt the motor and then one day came out to start it up and it was ticking real bad..

So, I adjusted the valves and it seemed to help a little but it still ticks.

I took the cover off to check the tension on the cam chain and it is fine BUT...

..The cam is missing the dowel pins that keep it from having side to side play..

Does this seem to be the likely culperate? Bike runs good and doesnt have any problems idling or smoking.

Well, I can't say for sure it is the exact culprit in your case but I know if it was me that I would go ahead and fix it like it is supposed to be. It is very likely that it could be slapping around a little bit. Good luck and post back what you find out.
