Lol, well sort of. Yesterday a group of us were riding on some local powerlines. I was on my Raptor 250, as my 400 is getting some work done on it, there were two other 400 exs, both with older DG pipes on them, and a stock Z400 Zuki. It was a good day of fun riding in the melting snow and the sun shining.

We did some lining up with the 400s and much to my suprise the stock Z just walked all over the piped EX's. Now I know that the Z is faster, but I didnt think that they were this much faster than even piped Ex's. Repeated runs all brought the same results, Z 400 by at least 3-4 quad lengths everytime.

I am just wondering if this is the same results others have had, or should the race have been closer?

It depends on a lot of factors…. mainly tires will have a big effect on the outcome. But I’ve heard that the z is just a little faster in a drag race.
Were the tires the same on both bikes?
Gearing and tire size may make the deference

Yep, all 3 quads have Holeshots on them, with alot of tread left. I just thought a piped EX would hang way better that it did with a bone stock Z.

Drag race the Z is a bit faster due to the fuel injection, but the 400 shines in handling.

It was an older carb Z400.

Rider skill will play a big part as well..

totally right. back when i first got my 400 i raced a z and he beat me about 2 bikes. my friend (who drag races these bikes) got on mine and they were dead even. someone who has more experience, and i say experience because i will beat him on a track, in drag racing will definitely play a huge role. but i dont have to worry about that cause when i get my bike back its going to be so fast i could have the worst rider and still win.

i have had both z and ex..and rode many many ex's.. i think the z is way better..not in stock form its not..but just with a filter and full exhaust and jetted right..thing will rip all over ex's... alteast mine did.. i loved that quad..one of my favorite feeling...i like the feel better than my 450r even

I raced a 2005 Z400 before. Well, we were actually going around my friends field/track racing. But we hung with each other pretty much the whole race. Whenever we would get to the straight at the top of the field, we both got on it. At the time, his Z was bone stock and my 400ex had the full DMC alien and timing key. They were literally dead even.. like couldn't be any closer in acceleration.

The Z400 is liquid cooled (heat=loss of hp), DOHC, and just a more advanced engine in general. Especially now with the fuel injection. Plus they can be bored or stroked to a 450, with aftermarket cams, porting, and high compression, and be on par with the 450's easily.

I heard the 400ex's u had open air box, pipe them and put a 416 11:1 kit just 2 run with the new z400's in a staight up drag race.

i raced a z400 with a cam vs. my bone stock 400ex and he didn't come close to beating me...he also had his quad for a few years...i just bought mine used the day before and i know his skill was better than me.

I raced my 416 against a friend's 2003 Z400 with an intake cam, pipe, and jetting, and we were just about dead even with a rolling start on pavement. An old style DG isn't going to add much, if any, horsepower, and a lot of other factors such as jetting affect performance. I see a lot of people add a pipe and then bump the jetting up way too far, killing any potential gains from the pipe. A stock Z400 with stock jetting shouldn't have a problem beating a piped 400ex.

Probably another skill difference, but ive raced my 416 against my buddy on his kfx440, which is the same as a z, and i killed him up every hill.
but as far as the stock z and mild ex, they should be about even, but stock the z will win everytime.

k i have an 05 400ex and my cuz has an 07 z400 with a two bros slip on, fmf jet kit, and k&n my ex has a supertrapp slip on, UNI filter, 15t front sprocket, and fmf jet kit his tops out at 78 mine tops out at 73 so thats pretty close for the age difference and he is a kick ***** rider so he beats me in a drag every time but i get him in enduro, track, and uphill

whenever I roll up to the line in the dunes, I have no problem beating any 400 model thats been slightly modded.

usually I win by a bike length at minimum, and I run a fairly stock (piped, jetted, open airbox) 99ex.

I think it factors down to rider skill, or maybe just a sense of timing like when or when not to shift, ect.

when drag racing in the dirt, 90% of the outcome is all about traction.....

to all who are unbelievers...it did happen..i beat him fair and square. but like i said he had his for a few years and it was definitely warn..but my used quad was only ridden for about ten hours so mine was still fresh. we lined up 7 different times on that day and i beat him every time.

well everyone on here who rode with a z,kfx,or artic cat400 will probaly say the samething my cousin has an 04kfx 400 and its very fast stock for stock it will beat an ex by 3-4 lengths depending on the distance of the race and with mods they get faster alot faster he has a jet kit full wb exhaust kn air filter he went up 1 tooth on the front sprocket and he has hotcams.and im willing to bet it would take at least a high comp 12or 13.1 compression 416ex with all the other mods to beat him.

My riding buddy has a bone stock 05 Z and we ran each other a bunch of times yesterday on hard pack dirt thru 5 gears.. neither of us walked on each other - it was all in the launch. Few for me, few for him. Even on that terrain we were roasting tires, super fun though. At least mine sounds better
