I want to get an earlier 400ex like an 02 or something. But reverse is a necesity for me because I mostly trail ride. How much work is involved in getting reverse and whats? the easiest and cheapest way to go.

would i just have to put a later engine in?

Well what u need is a bottom end from an 05 and up EX cause 05 was the first year they had reverse
Then take your topend and put it on the 05+ bottom end and the put the motor in your frame (dont no if u need to change motor mounts i wouldnt think so but dont quote me on that)
Then u need to find a place for the reverse knob probably in the bend of the front right fender where the new 400s have them
