i rode a atc250r once. and after one lap around this little track on my buddys farm gave it right back to him and ask "how the hell do you ride that thing?"
front end was so light always wanted to wheely. i could not turn the thing to save my life. but those guys on that video made it look so easy

Cause that's what we started on back in the day, I still have my 1985 Honda ATC 110 my dad bought for me. Still partial to 3 wheelers. Bought my 1st quad in '03, a Honda 400ex. Thats after my 350X started to wear me out trying to find parts, and when I did find parts they were an arm and a leg. Still miss those days, that's when Honda was really king for you younger guys. They mustv'e sold a bazzilion trikes. I remember in 1987 when they were announcing they were no longer producing 3 wheelers (any manufacturer) broke my heart.

That was a cool vid. Its been a long time since I have seen three wheelers racing.
That white one that is running in second most of the race looks like the atc450r that Jason Hall built.

quads are for the old and lazy
bikes are for the young and crazy
trikes are for men

takes more skill to ride a trike hard than a quad, and you can do things you cant with a quad, id love to have a tpc 450

Yeah I remember riding a 3 wheeler back in the day. It was a Honda but can't remember what model. Man were those things tipsy! My friend owned it and we would ride it around in the fields by his house. Those were the days! lol!

This is the cold hard fact....Quads were made for people who could not ride Trikes

There are many of us who have never felt the need to make the switch. In fact I won't even ride a quad because it makes me lazy and dulls my Trike skills. Our newest rider, Eric Jensen shown doing the heel clicker, spent many years racing quads because he couldn't find a place to race trikes. After only two races he said he has had more fun then he ever did racing quads. He will also be doing some freestyle jumping later in the year. He has also said he won't ride his quad at all this year for the same reason I won't.

I do have to add that probably half of the racers at these events are between the ages of 15-27. Its nice to see a younger generation interested in trikes.
The races get bigger and bigger each year. Guys come from all over the northeast. Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, Canada.
Seeing what others have built and the variety of designs also makes it more interesting then seeing the same cookie cutter production machines. In addition to our TPC 450, There are CR 500 conversions, CRF 450 conversion, YZF 450/TRI-Z hybrid's, TRX 450R conversions, Big Bore power-valved 250R's with modern forks and rear suspension, Stretched Tecates, as well as your usuall 250R, TRI-Z, Tecate, 350X, 200X. There was also a rare vintage racer (83?) Tri-moto 175 with custom vintage aftermarket front & rear suspension kit. (they came stock with no rear suspension)

03-04-2010, 12:04 PM
Yeah def. keep us updated with vids, pics, info. I love seeing things outside the "normal" realm. Plus I am still very impressed on how well that 450r trike works on the track !

03-05-2010, 06:56 PM
where is this track?

Derrick Adams
03-06-2010, 08:38 AM
That particular track was in Tallmadge, Ohio. It was part of the CRA Summit County Indoor series. The 3 wheeler racers will soon be moving back out doors for the rest of their MX season. They run a whole series in Ohio, racing all over the place. About 10 races per season. You would tend to think racing three wheelers would see lots of wrecks and such, but infact these guys have done such a good job at staying safe and courtious that track promoters welcome them with open arms.

Blacksheep is right about it growing and growing. Never thought an underground form of racing would get that big. You have to try it to understand why its so popular. You can't explain it in words.

03-06-2010, 09:03 AM
Man that brings back so many memories.
I didn’t even know they still raced those things. To the guy who could not figure out how to turn a three wheeler, you turn it with the right thumb. LOL!!!! The bad side was that until the R came out they didn’t have enough power to break the tires loose so you could slide it around. You had to rev and dump the clutch and hope you had the power to break the tires loose, otherwise you were on your head. LOL!!! (good times)
Here is a few picks from back in the day. 1982-85

Yeah that was in the astrodome and it was supposed to be a mud bog and that’s what I showed up expecting. But there idea of a mud bog was to wet the dirt down with a water truck a few times. By the time we got to race on it, it was all dried up. LOL!!!!

I had a great time though.

I used to do all the promotional stuff they had going on back then.

As for the gear, that was hip back then. at least i always wore a helmet.

Looks good Kintore

I have had lots of ATCs over the years and had a blast on them. I have a question about the modern race ATCs. I have noticed a lot of guys run the fast trekker tires on the rear. What advantage do these tires provide?

Black Sheep
03-08-2010, 08:06 AM
Most of the guys are running 18x11x10 trekkers while some run the 18x11x8 variety. The fast trekkers are a hard tire and provide good slidability. With the 10" variety there is very little sidewall flex or roll over which in turn makes them slide even better. Another thing is holeshots. The races are not very long making the holeshot very important. While back in the 80's the "lawnmower" type tire was more popular and better handling, today if you run them you are at a serious disadvantage off the start. The downfall of trekkers is they are heavy. I prefer the 18x9.5x8 turf tammer most of the time.

Figured i would drop in with a few pics of mine as well. We do indeed have a blast racing. I always wanted to race 3 wheelers as a kid but never had the funds of means to do so - so I took it up as an adult - and have not looked back since. The group of ours is like family and the atmosphere surrounding OTC races is just fantastic!

That looks like a lot of fun. I grew up with 3 wheelers just because I couldnt afford to buy a 4 wheeler. I got really good at ridding them though, and could out ride most of my ridding friends in the woods. I remember going to the local fair motocross race with my 86 250r and was turned down because their insurance didnt cover 3 wheelers. I'd sell my yfz and give up woods racing if there was a simular 3 wheeler series around here to race in. I didnt know they even exsisted.

Black Sheep
03-14-2010, 12:41 PM
lol...Micky i can't believe I'm making a living building and riding these in this day and age.

nicker, there are a lot of guys like you who would rather race a trike then a quad. Not sure of your exact location but, if you have any tracks around your area that are not under AMA sanction...(protecting our right to ride, now that's a joke AMA)...you might be able to get some racing going on in your area.

The next race is a month away at Malvern MX in Ohio, Big wide open track with lots of jumps. Bummed I won't be out on the track but, I'll definitely be getting some video for you guys.

Does anyone have any idea how to put one of these things together?

Is it just a case of getting a 450 motocross bike and bolting up a swinger and quad axle etc and fitting an ATC front wheel?? Obviously a lot more than that but is that the basics?

There way more nimble then a quad, if you can stick the front tire in between two trees then you can slide the rear end through sideways. Also you can get through the mud better on a 3 wheeler as well. And if you come up on a bump that is just on one side, you can lift the rear tire up over it without it throwing you sideways.

If there is anyone in the TX,OK.LA area that would be interested in racing ATC’s
Please let me know. We have an org. that may support them if we can get enough response.

Blacksheep actually sells kits based around the TRX450R. It's a combo of the TRX and CRF. Check with him, his machine seems to be holding up well.

There are also other options using bikes to convert, but no kits to speak of.

I would like to have a modern 3 wheeler. I think the 4 stroke power and updated suspension would be great. I'd rather have one based on the yamaha though. I sold my 84R and 85 200x last year and Im really wanting another trike already. Never had the 6 speed 200x, I've owned all the other honda sport quads and would like to complete it with the 86+ 200x.
I sink so much money into my yfz, racing XC its hard to afford anything else. Cant go a race without breaking something.

i think my name was freeride132 or freeridin400ex i had a 200x with xr 600 graphics on it..haha

i wish i could i broke my back so im limited to quads without being able to move my body around or stand or shift...otherwise id take you up on that offer

i always been a 3 wheeler fan its great what you guys got going

Not yet. I'm real busy building the 450's and trying to finish up the TPC 250F based off the CRF. Once that (250F) is done My next conversion will be a 400X followed by a CR 500 then possibly a KTM

What is your philosophy on the kickstart vs. Electric start?

I have a magic button 450R quad, but I am inclined to go for the kicker in the trike because of weight savings and manliness factor.

We will never in a million years be mx racing trikes around here. I am only considering a trike for the novelty, nostalgia, and sheer awesomeness! lol

I have a Love/Hate relationship with the electric start. I love the simplicity of kick start and hate the complexity of electric. While it does add weight it's not a lot and there is a weight savings when removing the quad front end. However, my right knee is shot from 20+ years of kicking over a big bore hi-compression 350X and CR 500's so...my knee loves the magic button.

i was going to ask if you planned on doing any cr 500s but i figured you prob got that 100 times a day haha

what about a 700 xx trike for the guys out west??? i wonder how that would handle with independent out back i imagine in a straight line it might have some advantages

lol...actually the most common question is "how much"

I've been toying with the idea of the 700xx. I'm also leaning towords a XR 650L based trike so I can make it street legal for the winter months here.

The XR650L would be a lot easier than the 650R.
The R would be sweet though

haha , i had often wondered if i got a old cb 350 and chopped the neck off with the vins and wrapped it around the neck on a 350x registered it as the bike and set it up for the street

i think a 700xx would be pretty cool, you guys run into any issues with the triple clamps breaking under hard abuse or do you use some pretty heavy duty stuff?
