what is the best type of bearing carrier? i bought a double wide carrier off ebay for my 300ex and it only lasted 6-8 months. is the stock OEM carrier better for the 400ex?
I am going to get it off ebay no matter what kind of carrier, so which should i get? and if i had a bucnh of money, then i WOULD get the dura blue carrier, but its $230, others are around a hundred.

most of the 400 dual row carriers are very nice. I have not heard of anyone having any problems with them. I think LSR makes one and there are some others that are really nice also. I would check out ebay to see the different kinds. The stocker is fine if you are not jumping 50+ ft everyday and keep an eye on the bearings. if they start to wear out they go really fast. steve

ok thanks, but how is the stock carrier compared to the after market ones. is it worth spending the extra $50 on an aftermarket carrier?

i think the stock one is great unless you do some major racing or something. Some guys have trouble with them cracking. I guess if i needed one if something happened to mine that could not be fixed i would get a dual row for sure. otherwise, i just change the bearings every now and again when they get wore out. I would probably invest in a good lock nut before a dual row though if i didnt need one. The main reason for bearings going is the nut coming loose. steve

yea i had the same problem on the locknut with my 300 and all you need to do is put electrical tape around the lock nut and it is doesnt come loose at all. its the first thing i did on my 440. got it 3 weeks ago.

then you should be good. keep an eye on axle movement and you will be fine. if you start to do alot of mx and such you will probably want to get one. steve

oh, well the real reason i posted this is because...
i was out riding sunday, there has been a little play since i bought it, everything was fine, then as i started accelerating again, i heard all this shaking and raddling and everything. took it apart half hour ago, its a double wide carrier that i have, he only placed single bearingds in it because the double bearings wouldnt fit for some reason. and while i was riding, the right side bearing shattered i guess because there is nothing left of it. and because i had to ride home like that, there are shavings from the carrier laying in there. im gonig to take it into a bearing shop tomorrow, if they cant do anything with it, then ill jsut buy a new carrier.
Thanks
Josh

I trashed the OEM carrier, (the locking nut was the problem) so I went with the lonestar. I also purchased a different locking nut. I serviced the carrier recently after several months of use, all it needed was some fresh grease and all was well. I'm glad I have the double row bearings, I thnk they will last longer than the OEM.

Just my $.02
