i'm looking for a project bike and i have a guy that has a 87 kx125 for $500. i have never owned a dirtbike, so i was wondering if this was a good price. i'll post some pics as soon as i get them. he said it will runn first kick and has been recently rebuilt

I had a fully restored rm125 and I had a hard time getting $600 for it. It had a new top end, transmission, and lots of few small things. This pic is kinda crappy and its not 100% assembled. I took the pic originally to show the silencer I made for it.

That sounds like a good price if it's in decent condition. I can't really tell without seeing a picture of it though.

Go with an newer bike. The old ones are so out of date. Its sorta like comparing apples to airplanes.

They sucked compared to today's standards. Back then then they were great.

$2000 for an 01 yz250??? :eek2:

You must be one hell of salesman.

You'd be better off finding a new project bike to work on. A local guy had a blown up 2005 rmz250 for $700. Not too bad of a deal. Another $600 or so and you'd have a good running bike.

just get an early 2000's late 90's 125 or 250 for like 600 put a piston in and you have a fun bike to ride while you wait 6 months to sell it lol anything is hard to sell right now so dont plan on quick money, especially around here it took me 7 months to sell my kx85 and all the 125's i see on c-list are there forever but at least its fun rebuilding it :D

i am actually thinking of just buying the thing for 400 to 500, and just beat the chit out of it, and sell it for 100 or 200 in a few years. the bike was just rebuilt and has 15hrs on the piston. plus the thing is so cheap i dont even have to tell the parents about it

I am pretty sure alot of GNCC guys are still being faithful to their 2 strokes. I want a bike to learn with and I want a 2 stroke. I miss the smell of 2 stroke in the morning (well in general too)

I'd take a two stroke over a four stroke anyday. Lots of power, 50 bucks to rebuild it and it takes 30 minutes or less. Plus the smell.

I must say U4.2 isn't too bad.

I'm just about done with 2 strokes. After making the switch I don't see me going back anytime soon. I would like to pick up a 250 to do some woods racing, but 4 strokes on the track for sure. If the new crf150r's weren't so expensive I'd be eyeing one up for my girl friend, but I'll probably buy the bike for her, so it'll end up being an 85. Looks like I'll have to start buying premix again.

Looks like a $400. dollar bike. If you can check the compression.
I can tell it's been painted and cleaned up. If nothing else buy it and spend $ 50. bucks for new graphics and sell it for $650.00 You'll sell it quick and make $200.00

Just a thought. Good luck

LOL shows how much this kid knows. Sure get a four stroke, have twice the money in it to rebuild the motor, change the oil every 2-3 rides, oil filters, valve adjustments, cams, cam chains and so on. Or have a nice cheap two stroke, spend about $150 on parts for complete top end job and have a much better power to size and weight ratio. Two stokes are cheap to maintain, a blast to ride and will be around for a long time yet. Just go to a local harescramble and see how many guys are racing 2t's over the 4t's.

Go to a local mx race and see how many 2t's there are compared to 4t's. Knock on wood, I probably have less money in maintaining my 4t's than I did any of my 2t's. Valve adjustments? Buy $10 worth of shims. Oil changes? You should be doing frequent changes in a 2t, plus the cost of premix will about equal out. I can get a complete top end with gaskets for $132 for my kxf. Oil filters are like $4.

Hmm so far we have a grand total of $14 difference.

Throw a valve and see how much it will cost.:chinese:

An whole top end for my 125, jug pv ring piston gaskets everything cost me 600 dollars. Not to mention it was ported and polished and all the other goodies.

OK do a COMPLETE top end on a 4t and tell me how much it comes out to. That includes piston kit, gaskets, valves, getting seats cut, and cam chain. Point is, there are less moving parts to replace and maintain. I like my CRF, but I'll pick my 200 over it any day of the week for woods riding. For MX, I would still take a 250t over a 250F. Its all personal opinion tho.

Keep your valves in spec and replaced when needed and that will never happen.

I'm not bashing anyone in general, but it seems the people that ***** the most about 4 strokes are the people that can't afford them or afford to keep them going. My 125 was a money pit. 2 or so clutches a season (yes it's a consumable item, so it's expected) top ends were done every few races due to compression loss. When an engine failure occurs, a 4t is going to cost more obviously, but preventive maintenance goes a long way. Just put a new top end in my kxf with valve cover gasket/head gasket. Total came to $139.87. That's reasonable and competitive with most 2 strokes. The only thing that well cost you more is your head, valves, and machine work for a rebuild. Cranks, rods, and top ends are all about the same between to two. A brand new head and complete overhaul with all new parts is around $650 when all is said and done. Did it on my cousin's crf.

looks to be in decent shape for its age, $500 is a fair price, i deal with stuff in that vintage regularly, any running full size dirtbike is worth $500......

and i agree on running a 2 stroke over a 4...so much cheaper....yeah local tracks there all running 4 strokes whether they can ride good or not, its marketing, everyone feels they need the edge...the new stuff...if your not aspiring to be a top a or pro rider youll be more than fine running a 2 stroke

until a 4t comes by and rips you through a tight corner. My results are better on a 4t than they were on any of my 125's. Possibly due to rider skill getting better over the years, but a 125 just doesn't pull me.

You can't compare a 250f to a 125 though. Try a 250t.

because thats what the teams tell them to ride and because thats what the factory tells the team to race...put a healthy JS on a yz250 2t and he still rips the entire field apart

At one point in time, the 250f was compared to a 125. I like the 250 2t's. Owned a few of them, but if I made the switch to big bikes it'd be a 450. I was thinking about picking up a 250 smoker to run some woods stuff, but I'm on the hunt for a nice 85 for my girlfriend.

She's only 5'3'' so a 125 might be a shade too tall for her and it's her first bike. I'm sure an 85 will be enough of a handful for her.
