Noisy starter

Starter on one of the LT80s has started making a quite dreadful squealing racket, and doesn't work very well anymore, either. In hopes of saving some effort, is that terminal or will a good cleaning correct it?

It's not so bad, now at least I won't spend the time to tear it apart and try cleaning it, only to have it continue with the racket.
