what to do before starting an abondoned engine

All right, so I bought a 300ex. The young man I bought it from said that 3 months ago, he was riding it, it lost power and then turned off. It does appear to have decent looking oil in it and it is not locked up. I don't really want to try to start it for fears that something might be wrong and really cause a mess. What are some things that I should check before trying to turn it over?

I was just thinking out loud. I guess thst it could be an electrical problem. What would it take to bypass the wiring harness? I did that on my son's 90 DRR. I just assume that I couls do it on this bike as well. I may be wrong. Thanks for the help.
