On a forum I visit, they started a thread about your skills or talents outside of the basic topic of the forum. It was pretty cool to see that people have some incredible talent in other fields...such as landscaping, carpentry etc. One feller hand builds boats for fun:p

I know Rich on here is an amazing carpenter and I love seeing what he posts up, so lets see what you do or make or have a passion for. I also know we have some serious talent on here in regards to landscape design thats been showcased before, but lets see it again if you got it!

Other than quads I love to mow my lawn, and landscape here and there alittle not as much as lawns though.

Here is what I am getting into.

Chain saw milling:p

I have the mill, and have narrowed down the saw and bar I want (Stihl 660 or an 880)

Plans are to mill slab wood, make tables, benches, end tables, bar tops etc and sell off slabs to others.

The saw is roughly $1000 and sports 7hp of 2 stroke nastyness:devil: The 880 is $1600 and is 8.5 hp but mightbe a tad bigger then I need.

Might be cheaper to strap a chain on a 250r engine:blah:

Good lord, jealous of me??With that deck:D

Yeah its the Alaskan, a 20 inch model. I have not even taken it out of the box yet....havent even bought the saw but will probably do that tomorrow or when I get back from florida.

I am really torn...drop $3800 on a bandsaw mill or go the chainsaw mill route and buy a shop bandsaw for resaw work. I dont plan on making boards mainly slaps and short work but the bandsaw mill would allow it. I think I wil start with the CSM and a Stihl 660 and let it grow from there. That allows me to buy the 660 and a 14 or 18 inch resaw capable bandsaw to get things started

I havent used my mill yet, infact I havent ordered the saw as i have been narrowing down which bar length to go with. Pretty sure I will start with a 26 inch bar(much longer and I will need an auxillary oiler)

Im heading to my dealer on wednesday so hopefully when I get back from Florida and Georgia it will be in along with the ripping chains and just friggon maybe this snow will be gone enough to make chips:p

Ah I didn't even see it!

26 inch should do ya just dandy, just remember you loose a few inches with the attachment. They do make an guild that will cut out the bark and some of the sap wood and leave you with a square log to mill. I forget the company's name though. They might be the same people. Your right about the oil though, I go through that stuff like beer on a Friday night!
I think the chainsaw mill is the better choice, plus you can bring it anywhere. That and you can't beat the roar of the motor!

Are you air drying or kiln drying the lumber?
Well if ya need help there Pappy, I wouldn't mind drivin a few hours to help ya.:blah:

I tell ya, you think someone asking here about shocks or what pipe is best....the chainsaw guys are off the chain!

They pretty much have me settled ona 42 inch bar in a 36 inch mill with an auxillary oil unit. The crotch areas and burls is where they say the extra is needed and I can see why. Hate to loose wood in those areas.

Im always open to help:blah:

Other Than racing...building bikes....i live on a 300 acre farm in wv.

We maintain our land...hay...have our own sawmill...where 95% of our lumber comes from. We raise, slaughter, and process our own beef. We slaughter and process pork for ourselves also.

I am a full time on call engineer. I supervise Drilling Rig and Well Completions.

And i am currently in the middle of a huge project trying to complete my three story house and garage...all while trying to accomplish everything at once... I am currently framing the second floor of the house for wiring and drywall. I have beautiful cabinets being made of hickory on the way...and we have our own jigs to plane/tongue groove/mill our own solid oak hardwood flooring (just made about 750sq ft for my parents log cabin). I finally replaced the antique garage door in this photo with a new lighter steel insulated door and opener (never had one).... When i bought this house in 2006 it was basically a shell will siding on three sides 75% complete... and minor framing and drywall complete on the 1st floor.... As soon as it stays above 32 degrees for more than two days this spring...concrete will be going down in the enclosed 32x30 garage area on the left side in 1st floor.

And on the right side of the house where the windows are almost floor to ceiling will be a master bedroom with about a 18-20ft ceiling.

When i complete the 2nd floor of three this year It will have 6 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and a 980sq ft Great Room/Living/Kitchen Dining area. Total sq ft will push 5000.

Kinda makes it rough on my racing season!!!! Up until the last two months i completed all of this out of pocket!!

Framing in second Floor. Plywood is setting in my kitchen lol.

I have basically been redoing every support and wall in the house

Very Frustrating dealing with a project someone started quit on especially when they ignored almost every basic construction practice known to man.

Good thing my father had a construction business when i grew up!!!!

I had to completely gut the 1st floor when i bought it. All new flooring, fix all drywall or finish. put up ceiling...insulation...wiring.. fix plumbing...etc...

Those mills look interesting. But you should see the sawmill on our farm. We have a Waukesha 6 cylinder engine converted to natural gas powering our belt driven Sawblade about 4' or 5' in diameter with a regular old log cart system. I will snap a pic of it for you pappy...(wont be high quality pic lol).
