The advantage is I studied harder then most, applied myself harder then most and worked my way to having Professional gear. You can have a bad *** quad and still finish last....same with a camera;)

Well then your talent is exceptional if you can get those results with a so so camera.
I have come to the conclusion that it’s not so much the camera as it is the liens you have on it. Those little digital pocket cameras just don’t have a big enough liens to get any great results. But all I know about photography is point and click. LOL!!!!!
Here is another just to keep the thread going.
How’s this on from way back in 1985?

I have never said anything bad to you or about you, so what’s with the hostility?

It means exactly what it states. Instead of telling someone good job, you offer excuses as to why the results are what they are when you have no knowledge of what your talking about.
You dont tell a doctor that the surgery went well, it must have been due to his set of scalpels and forceps.....You dont tell a mechanic he did a great repair job ...it must be because of the wrench he used. The tools may help the person but they dont operate themselves.
So when you tell a photographer the results are due to the gear he uses, it is an insult. Sort of like the 3/4 drunk guy at a wedding who loudly proclaims he could be a photographer if he had that camera. If a photog does good work then acknowledge their skill in the craft no matter who the photographer may be. And the role reverses when a photog blames the gear for shoddy results, its either good work or it isnt.

Ok if I offended you it was not intentional, yes I agree one needs to know what there doing with a camera to get the best results. But it’s no secret that the better the equipment one has will directly affect at lest some of the quality of there work. I’ll use your analogy to make my point, a mechanic with just basic tools can not do the same job as one with the best tools. Assuming there both qualified to do the work.
I have two cameras there both digital, but one is a 2.0 and the other is 12.1. The one that has the 2.0 will take better pictures than the one with the 12.0. The only deference in the two is the one with the 2.0 has a 35mm liens on it and the 12.0 has a very small liens. So that’s what I used for a comparison.
I’m not saying it’s just the camera; one needs to know how to use it to get the best results.
But you can not do the kind of work you do with a crappy camera no mater how good you are. It’s like trying to win a 450 national race while ridding a 125, no mater how good you are it’s not going to happen.
I paid 100.00 for my camera, how much was yours?
How many lienses do you have for it?

Bud, you reach a point where you have enough gear to get the job done at a quality level that meets your (or your editors/customers) expectations. Cost is irrelevant when comparing what I need to do my job versus someone who buys a camera just to take some snapshots and trying to compare them is ludicris.
If you want better results for yourself, buy the gear and take the time to learn to use it.
Again, a doctor cant do his job with a pocket knife so why would anyone expect a professional photographer do do their job with gear that isnt up to the task. You are acknowledging the skill but refering back to the gear. There is no need to compare your $100 purchase to what I use unless you are trying to make a comparison between your images and mine, which isnt the topic.
And yes, a mechanic can do the job with a dollar store wrench set as compared to a set of snap on wrenches. The difference being that the better tools allow the professional to do the job easier and the tools are meant to last and hold up to the wear of constant use. His performance as a mechanic can be limited to the tool onhand, but the skill remains. Its the same with camera gear. My Pro level bodies are meant to handle the elements and the rigors of extended shooting, quality wise I can achieve the same with bodies that cost 1/3 to 1/2 less.
And as far as the race, a magazine took a pro rider and an average joe racer and they raced starting out on 450 bikes. After each race the pro was forced to downsize to the next smaller model. In the end, the pro was able to win on a 85 cc against the 450....believe it or not.

It would actually be for YOUR benefit not theirs. If your buying gear and charging for your work and intend on making a career then you benefit not the purchaser.
We run this site as a business, ofcourse people benefit from the knowledged shared and we do not charge for anyone to visit here.....but how should we handle those that advertise without paying, that is the same as stealing . Watermarked images, spam, links in signatures....it is advertsing. So who do we send the bill to?
Susan this wasnt directed at you as an attack, just letting folks know that we get our dimes and pennies the same as others so its hard to accept someone complaining about theft when they are doing it to us:p
I make no bones about it, im out there to make money. I do not expect to sell images to riders as a source of income period, its just not worth the effort for the small amount of profit it generates. Im paid to be there regardless if I shoot amatuers or not. I could shoot all Pro and Pro Am riders and walk away with the same check, I do the extra because I enjoy it. I also do not advertise my galleries where folks can purchase images beyond whats in my signature.....I find that practice unfair if there is a vendor paying to be at the event for the purpose of taking and selling images online or on location. The racers are free to download and save an image with the site logo to share or from my site with the proof on it. If they feel the image is worth spending money on they will buy it, some just arent worth the money:p even when they are free:eek2:

Having said that, a fellow employee at work happened to pick up my December 2009 issue and I couldn't resist to secretly listen in on what how his reactions were while flipping through the pages.
