I have a 2003 400ex engine and frame. The engine is locked up on it and the frame is good but will need powdercoated. So i will ask, would this be a good and relatively cheap senior project? If i did do it i would bore it to a 416 stage 2 hot cam and 11:1 compression. but it needs new tires, new a arms, new plastic, new handlebars, new clutch. Could i get all this stuff cheap off ebay, or should i not even fool with it and take it for scrap? i wouldnt like to go over 2 grand. So what do ya think, could it have potential for a senior project, or should i just not waste my time on it?????

If you already have it then you can do it for under 2 grand I would assume. I got all my stuff for mine in my sig minus the pipe and nerfs for around $1700 all together thats including the price of the bike

id say go for it. if you play it smart you should be able to do it within your price range

good point ^^ if you plan on having the majority of the motor work done at a shop i dont see it happening for 2,000

what exactly is wrong with the motor? that will be a big factor on how much money your gonna be putting out.

unless you find some really good deals you might have to put the PC on the back burner for the time being

Well they blew the thing up and the o rings are fried, and we took the clutch basket out to put in a 99 400. So cant you just buy a 416 jug? if i could do that the only thing i would have to take to the dealer would be to put the cam in. i could put the jug on and the cylinder in and the clutch in by myself. i didnt mention but i need an exhaust too, so what do ya think?

man the cam is easy to put in. If you can put a cylinder on, IMHO you can put a cam in

well if i put in the cam dont i have to split the case and then weld it back together?

the cam is in the head, not in the bottom end

and when you split the cases, there are 2 separate cases, not a solid one, no welding involved

alright but still would it be just a waste of time and money? i would have bored out my new 400 and put a cam in it but, the thing is you have to give it away. Because it has to be something for the community or your friends. and i sure aint gonna give away my 2007 one. so what should i do? should i try to find everything cheap and go for it or not? once again i only want to spend like 2 grand or less

i would find something else to do if you have to just "give it away" No way id spend that kind of money on a quad i dont get to keep

i personally would not invest 2000 dollars into something that i had to give away. especially for a school project.

only way i would continue is if you could get some local shops to help you with parts or something. but in these times thats doubtfull.

id do some volunteer work. maybe at a nearby track??

Here is a picture of the cam on my 300ex. Shouldn't be to much different then the 400ex. Just a few bolts. Hope this helps.
