You are going to get all kinds of answers on this, most people change it every 2-3 races. That includes practice, heat races, main events... so every 2-3 race weekends I should say.

I change mine after every race or practice weekend, usually about 6 hrs on the oil when changed. I have sent my oil off for analysis, several different brands, and most don't hold up well for even that long. I say change it often, not much oil in the 450s.

The 400ex holds more oil than the 450s, but I still say change it often, about every 6 to 8 hours of ride time is the max I would go on most quads ridden hard. My wife's quad isn't ridden hard at all and I change it every 20 hours run time.
