I am planning to buy a 400ex but what came across my mind was what if I buy 400ex with blown engine? Reason why I say this due to I am gonna rebuild the engine even if I bought running condition one. Just wondering to the people that bough 400ex with bad/blown motor. How much did you pay or even for that matter got it for free? :eek2:

I paid $450 this summer for one that just needed the top end put back together. He kept the tires, but they were bald, so I just threw on a spare set. I have ~$650 total in the whole thing.

i picked one up last fall right before winter blown bad clutch bad frame.. for 250.. dont even have 1000 in it and has new frame, 11:1, sparks key, new clutch, new head new cylinder sleeve, new stem, and now have a RPM axle on the way, still looking for some a arms..and about to strip it down and start from frame up pcing things and making it racable for my GF..if you know how to wrench then buying blown up(most of the time) is cheaper.. i think more fun too..but i like wrenching as much as ridding maybe more..

It will be fun experience at my career center I took small engine repair. One thing I hate from that is the valve springs :scary:

i payed 100$ for my 400 and it cost me about 900$ to rebuild but i put hot rods crank new sleeve 416 11:1 piston vavles cam chain cam full gasket set and some other things but i dont remember its worth it because for 1000$ i built a 400 with a new motor basicly that is faster than a new one that cost about 5000$

The one in my sig I paid $550 for and it was running very badly. Since I tote it down I spent $400 so far on engine parts to fix it but it's also getting a cam put in it and the 416 piston. All together with wheels and tires and the cost of the bike I'm about $1650 into it

Hell thats a k there.. I need your kinda deals.. LOL hook a bortha up... As far as the rest of it I am doing all the work myself... I will be over 2k in this thing easy before I am done

ya it adds up so fast..im not even going to talk dollars on my 450 lol.. this build is going to be for the GF..its a stock bore though.. but still fun. some times i wish i would have gone 440 but that would have cost alot more like you were showing.. hell i paid 250 plus 100 for frame, head came with it.. it wasnt new new but had brand new valves and was pretty much brand new, then we will say 100 for sleeve 100 for piston, 30 for sparks key, had a front set of hipers already, had stock 450r shocks.. had some other little stuff..picked up a used clutch but barley for like 70 i think maybe less. 40 for a stock stem, 115 for the axle hell im under 1000 still.. haha thats with the axle included.. cant think of what else i bought but know i bought something..of gasketkit.. lol might be it..

Well hell then you got a pretty decent hooked up not soo good 400 then LOL.. Yes it does add up fast, i am getting some pretty smoking deals for sure.. :D

To the OP if your can get a blown up bike, you will spend in the are of 600-1500 for a take out motor that is running.. But if it is something simple that didn't hurt the bottom end, you can buy heads for 100 buks, have it put on and go

John:)
