OK, I have this K&N filter I think I want to replace.

Thing is, I had my intake and exhaust done before I ever had to even clean an air filter.

After taking it all apart for cleaning, I fear I might be missing something I need in order to use a foam filter, such as a Uni, etc.

My K&N has a metal flange that slides into the intake boot, and then it clamps down on that.

Looking at foam filters.... I don't see anything like that.

Or am I just seeing universal photos?

As-is, a filter would have to have a metal slide-in flange to work.

Help!

Are you talking about the air cleaner body? I think that's what it's called, anyways.

I don't know what I am talking about because I don't have it... and I never saw it.

All I have now is a K&N with a metal flange that slides into the rubber intake boot... and the clamp seals it up and holds it in place.

Pull that out and I have nothing but an empty box w/intake boot.

And I am afraid the foam filters for the 400EX might not have the same metal flange insert.

The pictures I see online show filters that look like they have a rubber boot to clamp ON to something.

Like this No-Toil for example....

Trying to figure out if I am seeing "actual" photos or not.

I would like to switch to No-Toil or Uni... something like that.

That's funny, I thought about this very same issue when I ditched my K&N for a UNI. I was like, "you can't clamp a rubber hose to a rubber hose"

Looks like we both overthink stuff lol, but nothing wrong with that. I like being detail-oriented myself :p

Back to the filter issue, you don't have anything to worry about. On the UNI filter for instance, there is a cylindrical metal cage that slips inside the filter (to prevent it from collapsing on itself). At the end of the cage is a hard plastic flange that fits inside the rubber filter flange. When you slip the filter into the stock air boot, the plastic flange goes inside the boot (like the metal one on the K&N did)...giving you something to clamp onto.

And good choice on finally ditching the K&N, your motor will thank you :scary:

Number 2 is what you should have, On my White bros filter it has a hole at the end of the filter and it just kinda slips onto the cage, then you just use a large hose clamp.

If you want a UNI ths is the one you want. It cames with the cage in the filter. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-08-Honda-400EX-04-05-450R-UNI-AIR-FILTER-NU4126ST_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem53df99bc80QQit emZ360233680000QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries

If you don't want to order it off ebay the part number is in the ad.

Thanks guys....

I certainly do not have part #2.

Glad the Uni comes with it's own.

The ebay link is a removed listing now.
So I couldn't get a part # from it.

Is the one with the cage just the standard Uni Filter for the 400EX?
NU 4126ST ???

The auction is still active, eBay links just don't like to work on here. It's $29 shipped for the Uni (part # NU4126ST). To get eBay links to work, you have to look in the url and remove br / and the surrounding brackets from it. Don't understand what it does that, think it has something to do with the way the forum shortens the link.

Thanks a million guys....

NU 4126ST it is then.

Will probably get that or a No-Toil of the same design... and will probably run No-Toil oil on either.
