Just wondering if anyone knew whether this was even possible to put a stock 450r rear shock on my 89 250r. my rear is completely done and wondering if it is cost effective and possible to just purchase the 450r shock vs. sending the stock in for rebuild. also where might one send it if rebuild is my better option. thanks

From what I've read, we can't use the 450R shock because of the attached reservoir.

I had a 250r with a 450r rear shock and there are some problems.

1) The 450r shock is about 1.5" shorter than 250r. This makes the rear end sit way low.
2) The reservoir rubs on the pipe
3) The clevis at the bottom had to be ground wider to fit the linkage

It can be done, but I would rather have the stock rear shock rebuilt than to try and cram something in there that's not supposed to be there

Thank you for the much needed information. I will look into rebuilding the rear shock or look for one on this forum that will work with no modification. again thanks for the much needed info it saved me a lot of time and grief not to mention money.

I didnt know it would even come close... if it bolts up and everything i might have to try it... how badly does it rub the pipe? would it rub a cenermount pipe? anyway. You can lengthen the shock pretty easily... just remove the top out spring and it would be atleast a 1/2 inch longer... plus if you use a 88-89 dogbone which is shorter it should be almost perfect. But that doesnt mean that the valving and everything would be just spot on.
