Phil,Sig,+the Hillstrands made that show IMO.

I might be confusing two episodes, but was that the one where the kid fell asleep at the helm and the father got his ribs broken?

I guess it isnt a big surprise. He was sick and smoked like MF and the mix doesn't work. He was my fav on the show and it sucks that he won't be there anymore. My prayers are with his family!
