Hey my 400ex will smoke when cold but once warm it wont smoke anymore, but i go through about a quart of oil in a few hours of riding. would any of you guys know what the problem could be?

Have you looked it over for oil leaks, if your losing oil that fast you have to be leaking it somewhere. Check everything over really well.

it could be the valve seals but you wont be losing that kind of oil that quick with just that. it must be leaking somewhere to be looks quarts in hours. steve

well i used a bit under a quart in about 5 hours but i checked it over for leaks and i couldn't find leaks anywhere i looked.

yea im bettin ure pistion rings are shot

so if my rings were bad would it hurt it to keep riding it?

no ure cylender is prob egged out so in that case u will need a rebore then piston, rings , crf450r timming chain, gasket kit also valve seals thats what my old 400 needed i was burning a quart every 3 hours of riding , i still road mine for a long while because i was waiting for parts to come , also now is the time to do any performace upgrades such as a cam or porting

Ya i had the same problem, sounds like your piston rings are probably shot or on their way out, starts as a light white smoke and then when its real bad like mine got its blue and burns oil like crazy, i wouldnt ride it unless your planning on buying a high compression piston and boring out the cylinder otherwise your gonna scortch the cylinder walls or at least take a chance at doin it.

yea i was just riding in a big snow storm we got just around my yard and now it won't even start i got it to start but not run great. so how much money should i have expected in this rebuild wise?

i spent a thousand on mine but i had to have my head sent out and valves replaced and the seats recut so it depends
