wont start untill warm

my friends 02 i believe 400ex wont start unless you pop start it. after its been runing you can start it otherwise if its cold you have to pop start it. what could it be? a bad coil or cdi? thanks

i would say it needs a topend rebuild. the reason its probly not starting in the cold is bc the rings expand when there here heated up and when its cold there not getting any grip on the cylinder walls. then when it heats up the rings expand giving it a little more compression to make it start from the starter. and the only reason it starts from poping it in gear is bc the wheels are encouraging it to stay running.
