Installed my 450r carb today, starts and idles fine but runs hot? Also falls flat under throttle, is this a jetting problem?

yes what carb size? Main jet size?

island400ex

Has the stock 118 main, 42 mm 2005 carb, I know I need to change the jetting but the heat issue has me worried, is that normal if things are not set proper or does this carb create more heat?

you are wayyy to lean. you need bigger main jets ESPECIALLY that you have a 416. maybe some1 with a 416 and 450r carb can shed some light at where the jetting shuld be at but i know for sure its lean.

I just put my 416 togather. My main jet is 195 and I am still lean. I think I will be around a 205 or 210. I have fcr 39mm carb, full port, 11-1 piston full pipe and system. Read the sticky on jetting the 450 carb

Yeah been through alot of the other posts, of course There are tons of combinations to choose from, i have done all the work myself on my quad, it's been a learning experience! But for some reason I am having a hard time getting my head around setting up the carb, when the engine was stock i ordered the dynojet kit followed the directions and it worked great! Now with the 450r carb can I do the same and keep it simple??

Lol, you had a full port done, what did that cost? And was it worth it??

3400ben
02-04-2010, 08:50 PM
moto-xperts did mine $350. Their are cheaper ones out there but after talk to toby I am sold on his work. Yes worth every dollar! You can put as big as you want of a carb on, but if you can get the air to flow you are just spinning your wheels and wasting money. Most people go out and buy a full exhaust to allow more air flow but if it can't flow though the head faster the full exhaust is worthless. IMO

Does any one have a diagram of the 450r carb? I need to know what to take apart to find the jets. Also what would be a good starting point for my jetting? I have a 416 11:1 piston stage 2 hotcam full exhaust open airbox with k&n with outers?? Going to buy some jets today just need to know a good range so I don't have to go back and forth, oh yeah I am also at sea level, any help would be great thnx

JOHNDOE83
02-05-2010, 09:10 AM
im at sea level with a 440, and a 190main is still lean on the top end. get a 190 main and a 50 pilot and youll be close. also try the website i posted jetsrus, you should get a few extra sizes up and down just to be safe. i buy my jets in incriments of 5 so if one is slightly lean the other will be a touch rich, then get the size inbetween the 2.

I have a question, was told there are different pilot jets for kehin carbs, any one no what model the 2005 450r type?

scottdom
02-05-2010, 04:41 PM
185 main, 55 pilot, needle middle clip, 1 3/4 turn. Fired right up with a little choke. Have a 426cc with 42mm carb. Actually started leaning out mine a bit to get more power.

island400ex
02-06-2010, 09:51 AM
Hey Johndoe, what is your needle set at?? And what's your approximate temp??

JOHNDOE83
02-06-2010, 01:40 PM
to be honest i didnt really check the needle placement...my guess is that it was at the stock postion. the needle only controls midrange power and when i test rode mine it was set right so idint mess with it on my 450r carb, my stock carb is on the third clip... the temp here in palm beach florida is anywhere from 60-85-90 degrees any given day..and your post about the jets differences i know for sure that as far as main jets go the 400ex and the 450r carb have the same main jets, as far as pilots i do not know...

island400ex
02-06-2010, 01:57 PM
Great thnks, got a selection of mains and could only find a 50 pilot, will try it out and see how it goes!

scottdom
02-06-2010, 06:50 PM
trying to send a pic of the dyno where we found good settings

island400ex
02-06-2010, 07:03 PM
What size is your engine?? Is that for a 416??

scottdom
02-06-2010, 07:26 PM
its for a 426. This setting was a little rich so we are in the proccess of leaning it out a bit more. Just thought it might give you a good start. With this setting it fired right up with hardly any choke.

island400ex
02-06-2010, 07:49 PM
Well I finished with mine today, 190 main and 50 pilot, didn't touch the needle and I'm about 2 1/2 turns out on the a/f screw. Fired right up no choke, idled nice, let her warm ip and roped up and down the street a couple of times, never got out of second but when I opened it up the front end was up with no effort, not so with the stock carb! Very good response! Love it!! Gonna take it out to the pit tommorow see how it does!!

island400ex
02-06-2010, 08:03 PM
By the way pretty impressive on the dyno! Wonder what kind of power i'd be makin? I would be real happy of I was close to that!

02-06-2010, 08:38 PM

island400ex
02-06-2010, 09:04 PM
I have a 416 11:1 wiseco piston, stage 2 hotcam, full exhaust and of 450r carb

island400ex

o i was kinda talking to scottdom because hes the one who put the dyno sheet up.

slightlybent47

I run a 416 with a recreational p&p and a stage 2 cam 12/1 piston, w/b mx4 pipe and a 05 – 450 carb. I don’t know where the needle is set or what pilot it has but I know the main is a 185. I think the HR kit for the 450 has a 185 in it, and this came off a built 450 so I think it must of had the kit already in it. It starts instantly with no choke, even when it 30 degrease out side. The power is smooth and strong all the way through the power band with the upper rpm being the best. I don’t seem to have any heat issues ether. No popping on deselaration ether.

scottdom

This wasn't my dyno. Before I started my build I was doing a lot of research on how to go. 416 vs 426. All the homework and dynos we found pointed to this type of 426 build, glad I did it. I posted this to help out in the jetting questions.

damn! if i get even close to that when i do my 416 in a month, ill be SOOO happy.

my buddy has a dyno sheet laying around of a 416 450 carb stage 2 cam stock header pipe with a 450r can if i remember hes at a 190 195 main ill find the dyno and post it up it was pretty impressive

02-12-2010, 01:43 PM
this is similar to my soon-to-be setup. im going to guess 37 HP. what you guys think?

island400ex
02-12-2010, 02:49 PM
It's almost exactly the same as mine, except I have the full exhaust, I would geuss 37-38 hp should be right. I am soo happy with my setup it pulls hard all the way through the rpms, the 450r carb definately was the icing!!!

I have 416 11:1 comp
stage II hot cam
open airbox with k&n and outerwares
full muzzy exhaust
450r carb
50 pilot 195 main
razors on rear, kenda klaws on front
and a bunch o cosmetic stuff

It's awesome! I love the extra power!! By the way I am glad to see so many ex fans out there! I hate reading stuff online where the ex is bashed because of old technology! I have been on alot of different quads and I think it's the best!

Miami_Vice454
02-13-2010, 09:10 PM
this is off topic, but i see your in vancouver. going to any of the olympic games?

Yep, gonna spend some time checkin out the free stuff! Lol!

Miami_Vice454
02-14-2010, 10:43 AM
lol so anyway yea the ex is bashed alot and it is one of the best bikes in my opinion. it is so comfortable to ride. i rode my buddys 450r and my other buddys yfz450 and i dont like them. then i rode a raptor and i HATE it. the only two bikes that are comfortable for me is the 400ex and 700xx but i dont like the 700xx because its heavy.

island400ex
02-14-2010, 12:35 PM
Yeah same, my buddys ride a 800 renagade, raptor 700r, ktm 525, an another raptor 700r heavily modded( he races in the baja) they all bug me about my 400, i've ridden all of thiers and they just don't feel right! The 525 would be my next choice but too much money. I recently took a trx 450r out and it sits way too high, and the power delivery is too touchy, the setup I have now delivers real smooth strong power. I was starting to feel somthing was wrong with me lol!

is it an option to remove the butterfly choke/if it has one,to gain extra air flow like most of us have done on the stock ex carb ?.

This is great info on he guys, thanks, this kinda goes with what I have came up with as far as main jetting size on the 450r carb. To be between 185-195 on the main.. That dyno sheet looks good.. I hope to make 35-40 hp on my 440 once its done..
